Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once said, "God is in the details’’. I agree, even though I don’t have a god complex like he did. How we resolve design details could change the look and feel of an object. Details change the perceived value of things, and make them more unique and memorable.
This series is an introduction to product design, with emphasis on resolving design details. In the following 4 sessions, we will go through various stages of the product design process, from conceptualization to fabrication.
Session 1: Basic Principles and Design Conceptualization
The objective of this session is to help participants grasp a basic understanding on how to make design decisions. We will cover the basics of product design, then dive into the fundamentals of design details.
We will be using a series of case studies as examples. We will then try to create our own design through sketching. The design should be simplistic, can be either functional or non-functional (as an aesthetic piece), and should resolve one joint / feature in detail with a lot of care and consideration. The main objective here is to learn and practice resolving design details.
If you have a project idea in mind, we could also work on your idea. Feel free to let me know!
Contents that will be covered in this session: 1. Basics of product design - definition, scope and key principles 2. Design tools and processes 3. Design in details: materials, shapes, fixtures & hardwares 4. Making the right design decisions 5. Design as a balancing act 6. Challenge: design ideation - sketching as a mean to ideate
