Did you know that most electric motors work equally well as electric generators? This is the principle behind regenerative-braking in electric vehicles, and also happens to be a fun way to power tech projects!
Kinetic energy is the energy of moving things, and by converting that to electricity in this combo lecture and lab, you’ll gain an intuitive appreciation for energy and how it can be converted to various forms. You’ll gain insight into electricity, magnetism, the power grid, and even thermodynamics. And you’ll acquire a skill that can be used to add a fun and dynamic element to electronics projects. This session will start with some kinetic energy concepts, and then apply them through hands-on activities.
This session is part of an Energy DIY series, including an Intro Concepts discussion and Solar workshop (attend any or all you like).
If you have them, bring any of the following: multimeter, stepper motor, DC motor (medium-sized gearmotors are best).
