New updated description!

Studio 2 – Drawing realistic, representational characters with reference to a live model. We will focus on creating characters, looking at methods from 'academic drawing' that are representational, using contours and geometry-based forms, to cartoons by Da Vinci, Disney animators, and other visual storytellers. Develop your own characters that look mostly 'natural', working from a live clothed model.

Part of an informal series of mostly stand-alone thinking and drawing sessions – feel free to come to one or multiple sessions. The instruction and feedback is designed for all levels of drawing (and thinking) experience, from beginning to advanced. (Actually, at least by the time you are 14, everyone has advanced experience with both drawing and thinking, – unfortunately, people don’t always recognize that fact, either in themselves or others.)

Whether you use digital or analog media, drawing is shaped by the way you think and what you understand. Two of the main approaches to drawing are representational/realistic and abstract. We will explore how the way we think about objects, characters, and locations influences what we actually see and how we draw. We will come up with character ideas and designs, then develop and refine them. There will be a live clothed model for sessions 2-4. Please bring something to draw with, something to draw on, and something to erase with (analog or digital). It would help to have a pad or something to support your drawing surface, especially if you are using paper, or you can use the classroom tables.
