How’s your body doing at the camp? 🙂

Since 2022 when I started learning figure skating and fell in love with it as an adult, I have been reconnecting with and rediscovering my body that I have ignored for the past decades. I was an athletic kid, but since my middle school years I have mostly been stuck on desks and chairs.

For the past 3 years, I have delved into contortion (a genre of circus showcasing flexibility), handstanding, gymnastics, mallakhamb, Katonah yoga, a bit of aerials, and “off-ice” training including harness spinners as well as skating. Recently, I tore my ACL (a major ligament in the knee) while skiing and had reconstruction surgery. The injury introduced me to a rich set of progressive mobility and strengthening exercises as a part of the rehabilitation process. All of these extremes have been incredibly inspiring both for my body and mind, and helped me form a brand new communication path between the two, which has been life changing for me.

In this workshop, I will share my warm-up routine that is informed by all of these genres of sports and performing arts. The routine has been constantly evolving over the years as my practice and body changes. Each part of the routine is informed by amazing teachers in different disciplines I have met along the way. As I demonstrate the routine, I will introduce the origin of the element along with conceptual frameworks that I have developed around it.

I love hanging out ‘playing’ on a mat. When I have time, I can spend many hours just warming up, trying different things, and pushing my body’s comfort zone. It warms up my brain and heart too.

Come join me, just your body. We’ll meet at a comfortable space so that you can follow along (or not) as much as you want. I hope your body and mind will be energized with good energy and creativity at the end of the session!

P.S. If you have your warm-ups to share, I’d love to learn!

And... [Hello Body #2] will be hosted by John Henry Thompson on June 23. Stay tuned!
