Step into the cutting edge of retro-futuristic civic infrastructure. In this session, we’ll dive into the U.S. Mail Computer System: Mailbox Explorer, a sprawling, interactive digital archive of the 3D-scanned mailboxes on the streets of Ridgewood, Queens.
We’ll kick things off with a screening of the official Employee Training Program Video (10 min) before taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the architecture that makes it run. While TouchDesigner is typically used for generative visual projects, Mailbox Explorer pushes the software in a different direction: it was built entirely in TouchDesigner to play and feel like a video game, complete with point-cloud imaging, interactive maps, and real New York flavor.
What to expect:
The System Tour: An under-the-hood look at how to push TouchDesigner past its usual limits to build game-like mechanics and immersive environments. (Note: This is a system tour with plenty of open Q&A, not a step-by-step tutorial).
Hands-On Fieldwork: Step up to the workstation and navigate the U.S. Mail Computer System yourself.
Physical Souvenirs: Generate your own official Mailbox Data Receipts! You’ll be able to print out custom thermal receipt-style stickers featuring the visual records and exact locations of your favorite mailboxes to take home.
Come join the network. We don’t just deliver the mail; we deliver the future.
