FAQ

Where is it?
721 Broadway, 4th floor, NYC 10003

When is it?
The month of June.

Are you crazy?
Okay, most of you probably can’t take the entire month of June to come and work at ITP. If you come four times in the month it is about the same time commitment and less expensive than going to a conference or taking a college class. If you can dedicate two days a week you could really begin to acquire some skills in addition to developing ideas. And you can come after work and weekends to use the facilities.

On the other hand if you can camp out here you could really get something done.

What are the hours?
The ITP floor will be open M-F:9am-10pm Weekends:11am-7pm . Sessions can be scheduled directly by the participants for anytime in these hours that is convenient but we expect for things to gravitate towards evenings and weekends.

When are counselors available?
The counselor help station is open M-F:4pm-10pm Weekends:11am-7pm.

What is ITP?
That is a tough one. We’ve eluded definition for three decades, and it’s been to our advantage. We change as the world is changing and maybe a little ahead of the curve. During the school year ITP is a two year graduate program in the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU where students from both artistic fields and technological ones explore innovative possibilities. On our web site we say we are a Center for the Recently Possible. This is what our alums say..

Why should I send my workers to camp?
To find out what’s happening on the leading edge of technology; to give them a boost of creative energy; to augment their skills; to re-energize your business. While it’s very generous of you to pay their way, they will repay you when they come back with new skills and innovative thinking that will redound to your business. Also you don’t want them getting into mischief this summer like looking for another job.

Why would I come to an event that’s not totally planned?
We want it to be half-baked, so you can help bake the other half. Most creative people don’t fit into, and don’t want to fit into, fixed forms. This camp can conform to you. Ask someone who has been to an unconference, it is more like conversations than lectures. We believe you learn more by doing than by being told. Our structure is agile; it makes it easier to adapt and follow unexpected things that turn up. The schedule will build over the next month. If you decide it’s not for you, you can get a full refund before camp starts.

Why is each session titled “Time Away From My Family?”
If it looks that way to you, bring the kids. As long as you and other people can concentrate, that’ cool. They can make stuff too. There is already something planned for kids but this is your camp. Plan some more.

Does it pay to lead sessions?
Most sessions are run for the mutual benefit of the participants. If you have expertise or a skill that a lot of campers need, we will pay you to help them. Paid sessions are based on enrollment and at the discretion of the camp management.

What is the difference between suggesting a sessions and adding one on in the schedule?
Any camper can organize a session by using the “Add Session” links on the schedule. If you need help finding someone else to run the session or want to ask to get paid for it, you need to suggest it.

Will all presenters need to join the camp?
No. Some presenters will come in just for their sessions.

Do you provide housing?
You should check Craigslist for June Sublets or Dorms at NYU (Check Enrolled in Class, Course Name: ITPCamp w/ O’Sullivan, leave course number blank) or airbnb (recommended by one of our campers).

How official does the organization have to be to get a group discount?
Your first official creative of the camp can be forming a group to join it. To qualify for the discount your organization must have an interesting name. If you are looking for takers from within your group, we can list it here:

  • Freelancer’s Union
  • RGA

I want to add/change a session and I can’t work the #!*?^!!!! Inteface
We apologize this interface in clunky and in some cases buggy. On the bright side, most of it is a WordPress interface so learning it may serve you in working other blogs. Also the complete administration of this camp is done with a guy and blog which is what keeps the cost of camp down and makes it an interesting economic experiment. Finally it will be better next year.

But for now, make sure you are logged in. Then click on “Add Session” to add a session. To change an existing session, click on the name of the session in the schedule and then look for an EDIT link below the description on the page that follows. If the EDIT link does not appear, you are not down as the session leader, (email us). Either way you will come to the editor for that session where you can change the title, description, tags, categories, time and date of the session. The time and date is the most difficult because it is at the bottom of the page (you can drag the box to the top and it will appear there in the future). Worse it uses military time (13:00 = 1pm). Don’t forget to press the “Publish” or “Update” button when you are done. (BUG: If you have multiple dates for a session you have to “Update” after adding each date).
