ITP Camp World Cup Creativity Madness

Weekend! To be precise: it’s not just a weekend, it’s camp weekend III ! And Saturday was packed with … well, a little bit of everything: From Arduino hacking to coffee-brewing to ancestry-discovery to talking robots to 360 video, machine learning, comics, Max MSP, fabrics and photography. Not to forget some cutting-edge update on javascript and a bit of Soccer World Cup vibes. This is how we like to mix it at camp!

Let’s do a little recap: we started the morning with Enrique showing campers in Arduino+PD how to get the Arduino to make sounds: light sensor controlled sound generation madness!

Lots was happening for lunchtime today: We explored the frameworks of comics through discussion and examples with Shea in Experimental "Comics" and Comics-Making as a Way of Thinking. After that campers discussed methods of genetic information gathering, how the data that comes with DNA tests in and how to find relative through this data with Marilyn in Who Am We? | Genetic Genealogy in the 21st Century. In Ok Robot Reboot! - Intro to Voice User Interfaces we performed a Deep-dive into voice interfaces and AI with Pedro: campers were guided through history, privacy, use in real-life and design challenges & opportunities. Part 2 of the workshop will be tomorrow - then we will build voice interfaces on our own. At the same time something else was brewing in room 15: campers explored a wild variety of types of coffee, refined their barista-skills and sampled their own brew with Nicolas in Coffee 101 - What makes good coffee, good + Tasting.

The now high-caffeinated brains tackled a big challenge together with Josh: Machine Learning Without Computers! Campers explored the “mind” of a machine and how machine learning works with raisins (!), Carl Sagan and good conversations about hyper-dimensionality.

While some went deep into neural networks, other campers learned how to shoot using a 360 video and discussed good practices on editing and creating in Shooting 360 Video: Cinematic VR 101 with Michelle.

While some went 360 with video, other campers focused on performing with it in Oren’s Live Video Processing with Max/MSP/Jitter.

For those interested in the most cutting edge developments on the frontend, Roy had some great news in ES6: The JavaScript We've Waited Decades For. But what if you have the greatest projects and you forget about documentation? To prevent this from happening, MH showed campers how to use a camera the right way with his Show Don't Tell: Project Photography.

Off-Screen time, colors everywhere and lots of wet paint were taking over the shop in the later evening with Kate - we were Marbleizing on Fabric:

What a day! And we nearly forgot to mention our (in)-official ITP CAMP World Cup Corner that opened as well. Playtime! With so many different things happening today on the floor let’s get some rest for now and come back refreshed tomorrow!
