This workshop is an introduction to building video performance systems in Max/MSP/Jitter, a node-based multimedia programming environment. If you're interested in audiovisual performance, VJ-ing, or experimental cinema, this workshop is for you!

In the workshop, we'll cover:

  • basic Max concepts like objects, messages, bangs, and toggles
  • how Jitter represents images and video as matrices of pixel data
  • bringing webcam video into Max
  • playing video files and managing video playlists
  • chroma keying and video feedback
  • building user interfaces and saving presets

You should bring a computer that has Max 7 installed so that you can patch along with me and try out code examples. I'd also recommend bringing a set of videos that you're interested in working with.

Max can be downloaded with a 30-day trial license at cycling47.com, and there are also ER laptops with copies of Max installed.

All of the Max patches that we'll make in this workshop can be found on GitHub, along with more resources for diving deeper into Jitter: https://github.com/oshoham/itp-camp-2018-jitter-workshop
