Code For A Cause: A Multi-Session Hackathon For Social Impact Grants Featuring Decentralized Web Technology

Part 1 of a 3 session series that will introduce several opportunities to align your ITP Camp project to a number of grants that are currently ongoing within the blockchain sector.

I will provide a quick demo on using ColonyJS: e bridge between the user facing and the infrastructure-facing layers of Colony. The colonyJS library allows developers to leverage the power of Colony’s smart contracts in their own applications. Bring your ITP Camp project, and I will show you how to patch in a rich pipeline to grants and a microVC network where you can apply for various sources of funding. We will primarily look at activating the social impact benefits of creative coding projects, which can include adding in educational components, student-driven documentation, and other artifacts that will release the most value from your work, within your community.

Blockchain Madness

We've seen hundreds of millions of dollars stream into the blockchain sector in the last year. While this initially brought with it a fair amount of fraudulent projects, and just poorly planned ventures, a few dozen projects have really created transformative technology that will undoubtedly change the future of software and the internet as we know it. Decentralized, distributed ledger technology, and self soverign identity provide the essential layers for reclaiming our digital identity and building a future web that is more in line with the original philosophy of Sir Tim Berners Lee, Alan Kay, Englebardt and others.

The standout blockchain projects that are doing the best work each have several million dollars to invest in developers and projects that demonstrate the powerful benefits of their specific protocols. In this multi part workshop, I will introduce 10-15 different blockchain protocols and projects that are currently looking for innovative projects to fund with developer grants and incubator funds. There is over $400 million dollars currently set aside to fund innovative projects that prove the viability of decentralized web technologies. Let's put our heads together and come up with some benefits projects for humanity that utilize the creative energy which flows through itp camp. As my primary interest in this space deals with social impact projects, I will use two projects as examples and will also feature a project of fellow itp campers developing an affordable maker space We will use the Colony.io grant as the first example and this example grant can serve as a meta layer for any other grants as the colony Grant focuses on introducing project management and governance tools that make ad hoc collaboration possible without the risk of being left high and dry. Through the use of smart contracts and multi signature wallets, stakeholders can outline the financial terms of each grant and be sure that they will be met. These sessions will serve as an opportunity to take a deep dive into several amazing decentralized web technology and features, and I will tailor the workshops to meet the interests of the participants as best I can.

The Colony Hackathon June 5 – June 24

Build real applications on the Colony Protocol with the colonyJS library, K Build with the Colony Stack Extensions and Integrations

Projects that connect external tools, data, and platforms we use everyday to Colony-ready dApps.

dApps

The user-facing applications that enable people to interact with the Colony Network, built by developers from all around to suit the needs of their organization.

colonyJS

The bridge between the user facing and the infrastructure-facing layers of Colony. The colonyJS library allows developers to leverage the power of Colony’s smart contracts in their own applications.

Colony Network

A set of smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain, the Colony Network handles incentivization, division of labour, decision making, and dispute resolution to make decentralized organizations work.

Let's put these interesting new opportunities into our creative portfolio to unlock additional social benefits of our work.
