This hands-on workshop will introduce simple and complex ways of 3D-modeling in Rhino and Grasshopper. The goal of this workshop is to understand Rhino as a tool to do many things. I will go over how to prepare 3D models for fabrication purposes such as 3D printing and CNC-ing, and how to export objects for your VR environment or ThreeJS sketches.
Students will learn how to translate their sketches to 3D geometry using essential Rhino tools and techniques such as curves, surfaces, and solids. Then we will transition into making more complex geometry using different plug-ins for the Rhino environment such as Paneling Tools and Grasshopper.
Grasshopper is an interface to make parametric, algorithm-based and generative designs. Its GUI (Graphical User Interface) makes scripting, programming and generation of crazy looking geometries possible without any knowledge of writing code!
For this workshop, I prefer everyone to bring in a Windows computer as Rhino works best on that. You can simply check one out from the ER OR you can install bootcamp on your Mac and partition it to have Windows (this is what I do). If you cannot get your hands on one, then you can take notes and follow along! :)
Rhino Download
Rhino is free to download and try for 90 days. Please download the latest version (Rhino 6) as it includes Grasshopper!

Grasshopper Download
If you already have Rhino installed on Windows, then make sure Grasshopper is installed by typing Grasshopper in the Rhino command bar. If it does not pop up, then you may download it from this link.

Paneling Tools Download
Lastly, after everything is installed. Please download this very cool plug-in called Paneling Tools!
