TL/DR: Discuss, design and build functional web-based video-chat applications in less than 50 lines of code in the p5 web editor with p5LiveMedia.

Description: The cat is out of the bag, Pandora’s box is open, and what’s done cannot be undone. Whether we like it or not, remote and hybrid experiences have become a vital part of our daily lives. And yet despite the deeply varied circumstances in which real-time video and audio enabled applications have snuck into our lives and made themselves cozy, the design and implementation of these applications remains largely homogenous. This workshop puts forth the idea that the environments within which we connect with one another largely impact the ways in which we are able to connect. And just as the physical environments we traverse throughout our lives are deeply varied in their architecture, design and rules of interaction, our spaces for connecting digitally should reflect a similar breadth of needs. After an introduction to some recent experiments in remote and hybrid experiences, this workshop will attempt to open up the design space around real-time connected video and audio applications through collaborative design exercise. Finally, attendees will be introduced to the tools required to create their own web-based video-chat applications in less than 50 lines of code in the p5 web editor.
