It was started in 2023 by recognizing the urgent need to research and adopt sustainable materials for prototyping and making physical computing and fabrication projects. We&#8217;ve been working to reshape \u2018what looks cool\u2019 in physical projects by presenting new aesthetics and creative possibilities of sustainable materials, ranging from DIY bioplastics that anyone can \u2018cook\u2019 in their kitchen to recycled acrylics that can be conveniently purchased off-the-shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We aim to serve as a resource for the ITP\/IMA community consisting of students, faculty, staff, and more by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Providing project consultations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sharing resources on sustainable material options<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hosting workshops<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting and collaborating with relevant people and organizations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Studying material use patterns on the floor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep caring, experimenting, and researching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inviting YOU to be a part of it (WIP!)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Material Kitchen have done:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conducting countless experiments on biomaterials focusing on agar agar and other plant-based ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing DIY biomaterial recipes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating projects with DIY biomaterials to demonstrate the potentials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nyu.manifoldapp.org\/read\/this-is-not-a-drill-2023-exhibition-catalog\/section\/8372a6bf-145b-4612-b00b-0e9899971ff7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exhibiting our research work<\/a> at NYU Bobst Library<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presenting work at conferences such as <a href=\"http:\/\/sketching-in-hardware.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sketching In Hardware<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/nyu.libcal.com\/event\/11611622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public workshops<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting and working with a wide range of biomaterial communities, researchers, designers, and artists as well as students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing and teaching a half-semester long graduate level research class at NYU ITP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizing a student biomaterial showcase<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Publishing alternative material resources including off-the-shelf options and DIY biomaterials<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We reimagine our relationship with materials: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What if sustainability can suggest new appealing aesthetics that have not been achieved through go-to materials like acrylics? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What if building material is something people need to take their own time to make, instead of buying off-the-shelf and throwing away? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can materials be a holder of time, stories, and memories? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Are:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Material Kitchen was founded in 2023 by <a href=\"https:\/\/yeseul.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yeseul Song<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/tisch.nyu.edu\/about\/directory\/itp\/941015613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Assistant Arts Professor at ITP\/IMA<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.priyankamakin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Priyanka Makin<\/a> (Graduate Researcher at ITP\/IMA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contributors include: Christina Cappelli, <a href=\"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/courses\/material\/2024\/01\/12\/sustainable-material-research-lab\/\">Sustainable Material Research Lab class Fall 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by Tisch Creative Research, Future Imagination Fund, This Is Not A Drill, NYU Bobst Library, and ITP\/IMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thanks To:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It has taken a lot of people\u2019s generous advice and kind help for this project to get this far.
