He&#8217;s really into fish right now and said he would actually try out our bioplastic lures on his next fishing trip. We did some research on what fishing lures look like and got to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To make these fishing lures we needed the basic cooking equipment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hot plate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-stick pot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spatula<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baking tray<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kitchen scale <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Containers and spoons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper towels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And then some equipment for cutting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Laser cutter (optional)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>X-acto knife and cutting mat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recipe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ingredients:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Water = 800mL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agar agar = 30g<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glycerin = 80g<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1\/2 capful of vinegar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yellow food coloring <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Color solutions: 40g of water + red\/blue food coloring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Instructions:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mix up water, agar agar, glycerin, and vinegar in the non-stick pot<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add base color food coloring until desired color is reached. It broke apart into different pieces during the drying process which was something completely unexpected. My guess is that the red food coloring mixture splattered on top of the sheet at the end made holes for the material to break apart. The recipe used for this batch was too flexible and had too much water content, even after drying. A bioplastic that is more rigid (and dry) will work better for laser cutting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tres has yet to try out these lures on an actual fishing trip.
