Cardboard Gantry

Build cardboard gantries

We will be assembling a one axis gantry, based on the work of Nadya Peek and James Coleman from MIT.

Materials
Medium Flat Rate Post Office Boxes (3 – 5)
Double Sided Tape
Gaffers Tape

Tools
Pipe Cutter
Screw Driver
Laser Cutter
Utility Knife

Hardware
Sleeve Bearing (4)
Aluminum Tube
M3 Screws, 6mm long (8)
Stepper Motor, NEMA 17 with lead screw

 

Cut the postal boxes in half and to a size that they will fit on the laser cutter bed.

Laser cut all of the files into the cardboard.  You will need two of frame_end.ai.

Assemble the stage, screw in threaded nut, and insert bushings.

Tape frame_end.ai to each end of frame_center.ai.

Assemble the frame.

 

Attach motor to frame with 4 screws.

Thread stage onto threaded rod.

Cut tubes to length with pipe cutter.

Insert tubes through frame and stage.

Image

The stage should move easily along the frame when you turn the threaded rod.
