{"id":282,"date":"2020-11-13T21:13:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-13T21:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/help\/faculty\/?p=282"},"modified":"2024-02-07T21:06:16","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T21:06:16","slug":"code-of-conduct","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/help\/faculty\/code-of-conduct\/","title":{"rendered":"Equitable Pedagogy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/groups\/equitable\/\" target=\"_blank\">Equitable ITP\/IMA group <\/a>is generating resources around teaching practices that emphasize equity and racial justice. We&#8217;d like to encourage you to take an active stance in thinking about equitable and just practices in your classroom culture and pedagogy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some basic guidelines include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Take the time to look at the diversity of voices represented within your syllabus (readings, example work, guests, critics). Your syllabus should prioritize including perspectives from non-dominant identities. The <a href=\"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/esp\/\">Equitable Syllabus Project<\/a> is an excellent resource for help with developing your syllabus.<\/li><li>At the beginning of the semester, take time to set the tone of the class by reviewing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/codeofconduct\" target=\"_blank\">Code of Conduct<\/a>, and perhaps expanding on portions relevant to your specific course, or invite your students to co-create a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seedsforchange.org.uk\/groupagree\" target=\"_blank\">group agreement<\/a>. Here is an <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1uV7DVr6Z0ZVw8tjH4C7xfNkpr_IKfijUaRTWne6tSOo\/edit?usp=sharing\">abridged CoC slide deck<\/a> and an <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSf6OaEXXvTE7WVORuBVregobVPcmQlEqUjiJxCISd2Kfj5WDQ\/viewform?usp=sf_link\">example intake form<\/a> you can use! <\/li><li>Make a concerted effort to create a welcoming and nurturing environment, especially for your students with non-dominant identities. Make room for difficult conversations. Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tolerance.org\/magazine\/spring-2019\/speaking-up-without-tearing-down#:~:text=Calling%20out%20happens%20when%20we,or%20gossip%20to%20dominate%20others\">&#8220;calling in&#8221; versus &#8220;calling out&#8221;<\/a>.<\/li><li>If you feel out of your depth in addressing a conversation or conflict, it is best to acknowledge that, and reach out for external support.\u00a0<\/li><li>Consider what biases you carry, and that students are coming from all kinds of backgrounds, including racial, national, religious, economic, educational, learning ability, health, family circumstances, and so on.
