Topic 1 Satellites(Space)

Research:

Based on the research and interview, I found that

  1. the rise in the number of satellites being launched into space is unsustainable.
  2. Satellites mega-constellations pose a risk to climate and the environment.
  3. Tighter global regulation is needed to ensure space sustainability.

In order to raise people’s awareness of creating a system of sustainable satellites above us, with long time horizons, I created this guide, with some brief description of the current situation of space.

Progress:

  1. A basic guide for people interested in knowing the satellite above us.
  2. Brief description of the damage caused by space debris.
  3. Gives people information about satellites, users can search the satellite’s name and give them information, including their names, countries, owners, users, purposes, orbit types, altitude, and source links.
  4. Users can scroll from the bottom to the top of the page to cognize satellite orbits, which simulates different orbits’ altitude.

  1. Aesthetically an incredible site, and love all the attention to detail with design such as scrolling upward instead of downward, and the information provided. The appreciation of satellites is clear. How to put more emphasis on the issue of space debris and provide a more critical thinking lens is a little challenging, but some of our classmates’ suggestions sound interesting.

  2. I love the aesthetic of this website! The idea of scrolling upward instead of downward is mind-blowing! It helps create a sense of flying into space. The website is easy to understand and informative. It has a clear target audience. This is a well-polished website I’d love to add to my web favorites.
For the first time navigation, I started to go through before the website was fully loaded, so I needed to scroll downward. This navigation progress reminds me of a common metaphor: comparing space to the ocean. I researched and found that part of the satellite debris will pass through the atmosphere and fall to the ground and the ocean. Maybe is it possible to add a scroll-down part to show how the debris falls back and some potential hazards to support your work from an environmental perspective?

  3. I love the interaction for this website! I have never seen a website start scroll from the bottom up before, and I think that interaction added so much to the experience by representing physical distance. One thing we discussed during your feedback session after your presentation was how this project could be more critical. While it gives a lot of information, it doesn’t show much about your opinion on the topic. One suggestion I think you could use to view your topic through a critical lens is to display information that could incite discuss about its controversy. For example, for each satellite launched, you could also display how much it cost to launch it.
