Daily Practice – Day 5 (2022-10-23)

As I finished reading Sunscreens and Photoaging: A Review of Current Literature, I was struct by how much jargon there is in not only this article, but also a lot of articles discussing skincare in general. It makes the decisions we make about what sunscreen is best for us, and the environment extremely difficult. This word cloud is representative of an idea to display all of the jargon, scientific and chemical words that a consumer has to wade through while making this choice. For this representation, I parsed the words from Sunscreens and Photoaging and spent a bit of time deciding a set of words to not include in the image – mostly removing common words that were not specific to sunscreen research. This process itself was pretty interesting. From the perspective of data integrity, this feels like cheating – I was manipulating the data which changed the outcome of the representation which leads into some questions I had with project 1 regarding scientific accuracy within art projects. Maybe this is okay, if the intention and process is clear to the audience?

I created a small ruby script to manipulate the data, that I’ll also include here:

But maybe we should just accept the genocide was just too horrifying and evil to ever be forgotten about, and do what the Native Americans did. But then, if using the same standard, I feel like I can also find many other things and symbols that we should all cancel globally if we treat all historical tragic with equal respect. Equal cancellation.

Acknowledging the fact that is still many swastika-associated hate groups out there. However, does this mean all cultures and societies should censor themselves with the symbol? Afterall, Hitler was a borrower of the symbol, not the inventor.

Sometimes, it’s hard to not see the cancellation of 卍 as a result of cultural hegemony. This is an example of how the historical tragedy and value judgment from the West is being prioritized as the global standard, while others are being treated as a local issue. With the influence of Hollywood films, the history of the States and Europe is often better known by the rest of the world compare to any other country’s domestic history.

Day 4:

Avalokitesvara figure from Japan Buddhism:

Japanese Avalokitesvara are close to Chinese Avalokitesvara. The gender is also female. The dress is traditional female garment in the old time. On the left hand, Avalokitesvara always hold a bottle which a willow branch is inside it. Below is an image of Sendai  Daikannon and my montage of Japanese Avalokitesvara’s figure.

Day 3:

Avalokitesvara figure from Korean Buddhism:

Korean  Avalokitesvara figure is similar to Chinese; however, some of the figures are male with moustache, but the clothes are female’s. Also, Avalokitesvara’s appearance looks aristocratically. It mixed mythical elements with Buddhism. Below is the Three Goryeo paintings of Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara and a montage of Avalokitesvara’s figure I made.

Daily Practice – Day 1

I decided to do sketches of plants and turn them into postcards that the featured plant might send on that day. Here is day 1.
