The last two weeks were especially challenging and I had fallen behind in my thesis development. Below is an update and a revised timeline.

INPUT/OUTPUT

After speaking with Shawn Van Every who wrote p5 serial (!!!) as well as Rudi and Kat Sullivan, I set the RPi’s aside. This is mostly due to time limitations and uncertainty of the Pi’s performance with this particular application.

I began the set-up using the TripleHead2Go, a multi-display adaptor / software and three monitors. My 2015 macbook pro did not handle it well and the TripleHead2Go setup was not working after a day of trying various solutions.

I moved on to the mac “trash can” where I will need to install Arduino IDE and p5 serial control.

The impact of ambient / daylight is problematic. I will need to work around it and plan to have the installation open as a pop-up on the IP floor for 3-4 hours.

Next issue to resolve is the impact of pressure from protective plastic/ soil on the monitors which turns them off. I need to make a styrofoam casing to eliminate contact.

SPACE LOGISTICS

I will need to settle on a location and bring around 150 lbs of sand so there are logistics to consider.

Animations/ Sketches: I am not yet happy with the results.

Sound – sensor interaction with sound is yet to be created. I will be using soil recordings as my source but hope to have sensor interaction based on spectator’s distance vis a vis the holes.

There is much inspiration from NIME and Moon’s p5 programming workshops but time is closing in on me!
