After watching the resident’s thesis presentations I was inspired with some new ideas for my thesis; mainly ideas for intermediate projects that I could develop as next steps. I imagined having an Alexa skill that feeds your http/https traffic to an improv actor who comments on it. I imagined my good friend and fantastic actor Adam making a hilarious sexual satire out of it, reacting with pleasure whenever a user sends more data. The actor’s audio output would go to the user’s Echo and comment on their http/https traffic in real time. I think this would be a great way to try having live improv in conjunction with smart devices. I will have to look into the Alexa SDK, however it would be a big win if I could enable live audio out of an Echo. I could see a lot of applications for this in future work. In thinking about this as a larger project, I was of a having some sort of enclosure that an audience enters and immediately they are being watched by some frantic devices (when Andrew presented the Cornell Box, I immediately imagined a bunch of ears around an old 50’s plastic covered couch). When the person enters, immediately the devices (voiced by a slew of improv actors) begin commenting on the nature of the user. Some of them want the user to turn others off. Some of them want the user to do one thing to justify their existence while others want the user to do something else. I don’t want it to feel like an interactive gimicky piece though. I’m not sure exactly what I am imagining or not liking. Perhaps an escape room. I dont want this to feel like an escape room? Do I want the users to be able to control the narrative of the performance?
