I have about a month to wrap up my thesis project and present.  To help make sure I am using the time wisely, I took stock of where I am and where I’d like to be.

Goal 1: Connect to myself – Develop as an artist

Goal 1a: Move my digital sketch making outside Geometer’s sketchpad by starting to create a codebase I can use in my own making.

KPI – I am able to produce digital sketches using this codebase rather than Geometer’s Sketchpad moving forward.

Goal 1b: Build on my 50 days of making with Grasshopper and learn digital fabrication techniques by creating a sculpture based on the subdivision algorithm

KPI – I have fabricated a sculpture based on the Subdivisio algorithm

Goal 2: Share with others – Introduce others to algorithmic art

Goal 2a Create an interactive algorithmic art-making experience that would be widely accessible

KPI – Subdivisio is available on a website and has been user tested with a range of audience for usability

Goal 2b: Provide some explanation of how the algorithm works using visualizations and explanation

KPI – The website includes a section that provides an explanation of how the subdivision algorithm is working

Goal 2c: Situate generative art and this specific process relative to related artists or connected concepts

KPI – The website includes a small amount of exposition connecting ideas and highlighting doors and windows with resource links.

Need to have Nice to have
Easy to do
  • Design dashboard elements
  • At least one contrasting example for subdivision algorithm
  • Deploy website to a host
  • Creative prompts page
  • Online gallery
  • Animation export
Hard to do
  • Design website
  • Algorithm explanation page
  • Further exploration page
  • Subdivisio sculpture
  • Refactor code for a construction class that makes it easy to include multiple examples
  • Pixel processing for improved output

 ‘Three Question Exercise’:

  1. My project will be a success if it…
    1. Helps me to continue to develop my own artwork using similar algorithms
    2. Makes me  feel like I did a lot of good work and learned a lot
    3. Can be used for a mini-workshop or lesson in school next year
    4. Inspires other people to learn or create something
  2. One surprising way people could use or react to my project is…
    1. Ask interesting questions for inquiry
    2. Develop their own artwork based on the idea
    3. Take the images outputted and do something with them unexpected
    4. Ask me to do a workshop
  3. If my project fails, it will probably be because…
    1. I was trying to do too much before the deadline
    2. Didn’t do enough user testing to understand usability
