Hi! I’m not sure if this is supposed to be one long paragraph BUT for my draft I wanted to answer the guiding questions and including all my thoughts that went into answering the questions and see where answering these questions take me as I convert it to my final draft. The best answers to the questions are in bold.

Personal questions about thesis proposal:

What format should it be? A statement?

How long should I expect it to be?

Is it something that can be continually edited or is it set in stone?

WHAT IS YOUR THESIS QUESTION? (approx 2-3 sentences)

In order to give your project depth and rigor it is helpful to frame the idea you are exploring as a research question. What is the central question, problem statement, or area of inquiry that you will try to investigate and answer/address? What is the significance of the question? Why does it matter and to whom? Here are some guiding principles we have found helpful in working through your question:

  1. Is it something that you are genuinely interested and curious about?
  2. Is it broad enough that it doesn’t allow for simple factual answers (yes/no responses)?
  3. Is it narrow enough that it can be answered/addressed given the available time and resources?

How can we use technology to connect each other?

How can user generated content such as photo, video, tweets and memes be used to inform/connect people within their local communities and social bubbles and outside them?

How can user generated content be used to inform/connect people outside their social bubbles?

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE? (approx 3-5 sentences)

  • What form will your thesis project take?
  • How does what you plan to make address your Thesis Question?

This project will take the form of an app on a smart phone where UGC is aggregated based on geo-location. It addresses the question because it will allow individuals a more objective approach to being connected and informed online.

Following allows you to narrow in on your interests but takes away other view points which are important to be challenged

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS WITH THIS PROJECT? (approx 3-5 sentences)

  • What do you envision as the outcome of this project?
  • What do you hope will be the impact of this project?

My goal is to create an online media platform that tries to highlight all the wonderful aspects of social media and what the technology affords us and to diminish the downsides. A place where you can be informed quickly about your community and what people are doing but also quickly see what’s happening in other parts of the world.

  • Neeed to narrow down what I want people to see and take away. A more objective view

I envision the outcome of this project to be a more objective curation of news sourced by individuals who were there and on the ground and from the community. It will be impactful because individuals will be informed not by who they follow and not by but by video/photos

And more news like 5 things that are happening around the city today. Zoom out 5 things happening in US today. And aggregating videos/photos posted on it.

-need different vantage points

-videos/photos on social can be manipulated

-need some kind of editor to monitor?

-is pure objective video possible?

-do you need text to provide context?

INFLUENCES OR INSPIRATION? (approx 1-2 sentence description accompanying each link)

  • Share at least 10 links to references that directly relate to your project. Discuss their relevance and how you can build upon them in your work. The following categories should be covered in the links you share – projects, publications, persons.
  • Share links to any projects you have already done yourself that you intend to leverage and/or build upon?

  • Trying to get at the fact that when I am on IG I learn about new places to go and want to go there and live a new experience I’ve never tried before
  • I message people and ask where is this
  • I see video from someone elses point of view
  • I want to help share those experiences
  • But also I think how at work because people have cellphones all the time we are able to capture moments that only journalist used to be able to capture and that’s fantastic because video and photos are so powerful aka George Floyd
  • They can help us to see and live that experience like a movie does
  • Can we make a news source that newsgathers from UGC?
  • Reach out to people and ask them what happened etc online journalist
  • What videos are people posting about what they are doing and what goes on in their city better know your community and world
  • Jump around to be moments in the city today and then the world

I NEED TO LOOK FOR MORE LINKS AND ADD WHY THEY ARE RELEVANT

HOW DO YOU ENVISION REALIZING THIS PROJECT? (max 150 words)

  • What are the key steps necessary to make this project a reality?
  • Are there key benchmarks you will need to meet?
  • What techniques, tools, materials are you planning to use and why?
  • Is there a community, space or audience you will need to access?
  • What further research and/or skill-building will you need to do?

I will need a lot of help/guidance to build this project. I will need to figure out the steps to build a site like this. I do not come from a coding background and the project I am proposing has a lot of coding work to build.

Maybe I should scale down to a project that meets my skill level? :/ I want to be ambitous though.

OPTIONAL QUESTIONS (approx 2-3 sentences each)

  • WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF STRENGTH?
  • WHAT AREAS DO YOU NEED TO WORK ON?
  • TECHNOLOGIES YOU WANT TO EXPLORE IN MORE DEPTH?

My strengths are writing/design. Need to work on time management and coding.
