WHAT IS YOUR THESIS QUESTION? (approx 2-3 sentences)

Due to the pandemic, we’re all being pushed into an online status more ever than before. While this “new normal” is something that we will continue to adapt to, it comes at a highly emotional time with a certain level of confusion, frustration, and a loss of in-person connection we are used to. At the vulnerable moment, I still believe people are in the desire of human connectivity. That makes this the ideal moment to introduce users to new and more meaningful interactions.

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO MAKE? (approx 3-5 sentences)

I wish it should be an installation for public space(like a park) or site-specific. Through the audience immersive presence, the viewer is directly implicated in the work. It encourages people to explore the interpersonal boundaries and question dimensions of intimacy. Through shows, the beauty of human connectivity, makes invisible things visible to let the project explore subtle things and the spark moment that would happen between 1.5ft to 4ft. I wished my audience to have a shared experience.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU? (approx 3-5 sentences)

I have been engaged in content production for years and I was driving by the question of how the mixture of data, human interaction, and storytelling can transform the way of communication. To find the key element that could help people feel intimate and connected, visualize them. That’s one of my passion and why am here.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS WITH THIS PROJECT? (approx 3-5 sentences)

I hope this project will be as good enough to be presented. If it can have some compatibility, with simple, minimal work so that it can be interpreted on different sites, that would be great. My vision of this project is it actually addresses this theme with new creativity and imagination, to show the importance of human connectivity and interaction.

The artwork shows contour lines that become visible by walking over a flexible membrane surface having laser scanning light underneath it. Your presence physically pushes the membrane down to the floor which therefore reveals lines of light. Where you walk a circle of blue light surrounds your presence, interacting with your behavior.

-I hear talking is dangerous

I think this project is asking the same question:This project invites each person to visit a URL on their phone to continue the conversation. They proceed, discussing danger, safety, the future. That feeling of never knowing what is safe. Who you can safely engage with. How to find a connection.  What have we learned to say via a screen in these months apart? What have we learned to avoid? How do we reach each other?

-Knowing Together

Impressive form. This experiment in collaborative photogrammetry has rich content in it. Include the experience the boundaries of the intimate, embrace the gaze from others. The audience’s different angles represent their position.

-Forest of light  keywords: installation/Sound/light

Inspired by nature and the experience of a forest at twilight, the installation presents light and sound in a new architectural context.

we are not really strangers

The founder cleverly applied thoughts on signage including billboards, trucks, and posters to build community. She then created a Kickstarter to build a card game that allowed people to get closer to meaningful connections with one another. Basically, the topic on the card guides the conversation, the topic starts from making assumptions about each other end at leaving messages to each other.

-The artist is present  keywords: eye contact/participation/audience involvement

-Rotazaza Etiquette @ YBCA

Two audiences follow the lines given in the headphones perform in the cafe or other public site. There are specific props on the table for them to use.

Inspired by this project, maybe I can design a voice assistant to guide strangers to change their distance make the lighting system or environment interact with the audience’s behavior.

beauty of connectivity

-HOLA

Collaborating with the natural fluctuations in the climate, Halo appears only for moments when the wind, sun, water, and technology coincide, creating a form that exists between the material and immaterial.

-LUNAR SURFACE

A vertical flag of fabric is stroked by the wind, displaced by curves of air, swinging back and forth. As it sweeps, it leaves a trail of light which draws a heavy fragile moon floating in space. The flag renders this moon from another reality, the silk surface acting as an intermediating manifold between reality and virtuality.

-INFINITY LINES

The chaotic cross-sections of “Infinity Lines” allude to the interconnectedness of human memory and how those memories are dependent on impermanent objects, like empty chairs.

-The Human And Social Dimension Of Urban lightscapes

Lighting has the agency of manipulating people, with a subtle influence on social behaviors. Obviously, people feel more comfortable in the warm, small aperture lighting, their bodies move closer to each other. One of the participants feels the lighting system is express its feeling.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION REALIZING THIS PROJECT? (max 150 words)

Because so far I didn’t have a clear vision of the final outcome. Blew these base on my assumption.

-I think the key step in making this project a reality is to find triggers (which can be a series of activities) to build the spark moment.

-I didn’t fully understand the key benchmarks. I think at least in my project: within 10 mins, people can have shared experiences, feel safe and delightful, or being together against something(for this direction, maybe I need to design a story)

-a sensor to track the position of people, touch designer(?)for design the visual and interaction, projection for an immersive experience, lighting system to guide people (please correct me and add more if I miss something)

Lujiazui green space is an ideal location for my experiment(not the final outcome), parks are public and private places, and there are plenty of random people there.

-The initial idea is I could create an AI guide to help lead people,it can detect the distance between two people, and make the lighting system or environment that could interact with the audience’s behavior.

  • Interface design/ pose net /touch designer / computer visual design /position tracking

OPTIONAL QUESTIONS (approx 2-3 sentences each)

  • WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF STRENGTH?

-video production/ concept development

  • WHAT AREAS DO YOU NEED TO WORK ON?

I hope to do my best to ensure the completion of the work, so I am willing to devote the time and make efforts on it.

  • TECHNOLOGIES YOU WANT TO EXPLORE IN MORE DEPTH?

-I want to get into any technologies relate to my project.
