week3 study and dream review
I think I’ve got some indications that can present people are getting closer, but I didn’t find the trigger, not that intentional. My vision of my own work is an installation that can activate public space. Therefore,I specifically focused on Urban/nonverbal cues/Connection when I document my research words. And I found this book:
The Human And Social Dimension Of Urban lightscapes
https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/978-3-030-57165-8.pdf
The author showed me how interesting the social-oriented lighting would be. And help me understand the use and influence of lighting systems in interpersonal communication through solid research.
It demonstrates that lighting has the agency of manipulating people, with a subtle influence on social behaviors. Obviously, people feel more comfortable in the warm, small range of lighting, their bodies move closer to each other. During the interviews, people addressed the warm lighting as more intimate, comfortable, and cozier, enhancing “communication and closeness in psychological terms”, defining a more intimate atmosphere, which fits more the social situations. It reminds me that create a safe and relaxed atmosphere, it is easier to open people’s emotional switch.
In my personal experience, when we want to stand out some details or attract the audience’s attention a spotlight is always a great tool in stage performance. The lights play the role as assist in the performance without being intrusive or disturbing audiences’ attention. I don’t like to have strict guidelines in my final output. Maybe I can adjust the range of light projected on the ground ,create an intimate atmosphere from the perspective of the environment so that the people involved in my project stand together naturally.
Another thing that makes me excited from the essay is the belief of the interview the participants: “I think it is kind of weird because the system is showing the feelings. This showed me the possibility of incorporating interactive lighting into my projects, though I have no idea where it will lead me to.
I still not fully sure about how to incorporate all my research within a project, I want to find some articles and works. I think my thesis theme is still based on some optimistic imagination, too many subtle feelings in it. I wasn’t sure what the final output would be, so the other decision I made this week was that I wasn’t obsessed with two random people connecting and that connection start from me might bring more certainty to the project.
My dream review:
The exhibition takes its reference from some known experimental approach that combines the use of sound and interactive lighting systems alongside personal experience in her work. Through their immersive presence, the viewer is directly implicated in the work. It encourages people to explore the interpersonal boundaries and question dimensions of intimacy. It takes effort on unveiling the fog that inhibits us from discovering the creative and imaginary powers embedded in our sensory system.
