Thesis Development&Show A Thing Show reflection
#PART1
After about two weeks of visual difficulty in coordinating the logical structure and form of my work, I finally got a clearer and more concise plan.
In the mid-term presentation, I found many problems of my current stage.
First of all, it is difficult for viewers to intuitively and comprehensively enter the play I designed. Of course, they can simply click a button to make the interaction in the scene happen, but after that, they can only get a small amount of information.
Secondly, I got so much unprocessed information during the research of this project that I completely lost the direction of my expression. When others heard my explanation, they would be led into multiple directions and feel confused.
So,
1.I removed the decorative visual elements with symbolic functions in my work. Although these things can make it obvious to the viewer that this is a “temple” or a “shrine”, I found it difficult to find appropriate visual elements in the absence of time accumulation. A mural in a Christian church or a sculpture in a Buddhist temple can take more than a decade to create.
2.I rewrote the metaphor of behavior in my work. My original three metaphors are Internet, consumption and games, and these three metaphors hardly constitute a logical relationship. They are more like my list of phenomena. Assuming that we regard the Symbolic Order in Lacan’s Three Orders Theory as the digital/computer world , or regard the digital world as the collective space of all symbols, we can develop a new set of relations based on the logic of my work.
i.Digital space in the real world = imagery order =
A monitor “box”, we can think of the monitor as a new kind of shrine and there is a program made with Unity running in it.
ii. Real space in the digital world = symbolic order =
An AR app which people can use on their mobile phones and play with their phones’ camera.
iii.The total set of behaviors = the real =
Toys with price.
#PART2
In Show a Thing Show, Jamie and Cezar really gave me a lot of helpful advice and resources. I think one of the things that impressed me the most and is very important for my future work is Jamie’s question about Face in my work.
The Face of my work is one of the most important elements, it affects the storytelling of the work.So far I’ve just used a piece of software to randomly generate a face that doesn’t belong to anyone. The reality is that it can be used, but this part can be dug deeper. StyleGAN is a good machine learning technique, and I can use it to generate a lot of fake faces that look real, but it’s still a question I’m not sure what person’s face is used as raw data to influence the information contained in that face. And do I need a real face?
