Experiment:

This week I called different family members and friends from home and talked about memories, holidays spent together, and things we are looking forward to doing together. During these conversations, I compiled a list of sounds that remind me of home. They didn’t know about this, but as we talked about our memories they were simultaneously reminding me of the sounds that are nostalgic to me.

List of sounds that feel like home:

  • Voices of mami, papi, Santi, Tia Luper, Grandma, and Grandpa
  • Their laughs^
  • Mexican soccer commentators
  • The news in spanish
  • Fireworks
  • Banda and cumbia music
  • Bikes at a windy park
  • The overlapping conversations at a family gathering
  • Street vendor bells
  • The starting of a car
  • Comfortable silence
  • Pots and pans at my grandparents restaurant

Box:

This box is playing with how a pinata looks visually and what it can represent. Not knowing what’s inside and the act of it being broken is a visual that I’m interested in exploring. I’ve gone through so many different ideas that I’ve written down, so I wanted to show that through the crumbles papers in the center of the bowl. The earrings are a pair that I’ve been wearing almost every day for a year. Hoops are so much of a part of me that I have always thought I looked weird without them on. The center is a mix of thrown away ideas with something that is a part of me, inside of a pinata bowl.
