Thesis Week 11
Updated timeline
Continued research
For the physical computing part, this week I was introduced to projection mapping and have been playing with MadMapper as a technical practice. Also, I’m sourcing various fabric materials that can be used as projection interfaces. Here is a list of materials from available vendors.
- Stainless steel water ripple decorative plate
- Metallic wallpaper
- Chiffon fabric hanging cloth
- Linen sheer curtain
- Plastic polyurethane faux stone 3D wall panel
- Wood slice wall and wooden wall
For the creative coding part, thanks to Ruta, Enrique, and YG for the resources that address the p5.js issues including,
- AudioIn(); getLevel(); for microphone input on Chrome
- map(); sin(); constrain();
- frameRate();
- Multiple canvases in the same page
- Conditional operator ?:
Design and development
Based on the current Covid restrictions and what I have on hand, here is an updated plan for my thesis project.
A Tale of Two Lives in 3 Layers
- Layer 1: An algorithmic fractal tree interacts with microphone inputs of web users in digital space.
- Layer 2: Projection mapping the fractal tree onto artificial materials to the public in physical space.
- Layer 3: A dancing body and a swaying tree perform collaboratively in both virtual and real space.
*For Layer 3, I may need recommendations to find a dancer. At the moment I’m not 100% sure if this part is doable as I’ve had few connections with dancers before. But I would be very grateful if the end outcome could be a dancing body and a (digital) tree performing together in collaboration, symbolizing a more equitable communication between humans and plants. If recruitment fails, another strategy will be proposed for Layer 3 prior to/during the summer session.
Week 12 Finish Layer 1 + Prepare for Layer 2 and Layer 3
- Resolve technical issues of Layer 1+2 and get suggestions for Layer 3 through Show-A-Thing event
- Order a low-cost projector and different materials for prototyping and testing
- Research potential dancers who are able to perform with the fractal tree
Week 13 Start Layer 2 + Prepare for Layer 3
- Test different materials with a projector and decide which one to be used as an interface
- Set up Layer 2 in a public/private outdoor/indoor scene, depending on the Covid situation
- Continue to research and reach out to potential dancers
Week 14 Finish Layer 2 + Start Layer 3
- Iterate the projection effect based on testing
- Record video demo for the final Spring thesis class
- Prepare plan B for Layer 3 prior to the summer session if recruitment fails
