Show-A-Thing reflection

Feedback sessions slides

It’s been great fun in Show-A-Thing, and I’m grateful to Rudi, Tiri, David, Eric, and Moon for being part of my thesis. We had some really meaningful conversations around my project regarding the current progress and next steps. Integrating the feedback and suggestions I received, here is the latest plan for my thesis.

A Tale of Two Lives

To foster relationships between humans and plants through interactive media in 3 chapters, corresponding to 3 relations,

Chapter 1  Real But Got Tree – Observe it

  • Project the computational tree with fractals and physics in natural environments or alternatives

Chapter 2  When The Tree Talks – Speak it

  • Use the microphone inputs from web users as representatives of human activities in global ecologies

Chapter 3  Our Future Present – Accompany it

  • Invite a plant and a person into a meditative space
  • They sit next to each other
  • Visualize the parameters of the environment and the waves of the human brain
  • Show how the real-time feelings of two beings
  • Create equality and harmony between humans and plants

Updated timeline

Week 13  Work on Chapter 1 + 2

  • Test different materials with a projector and decide which material to use as the interface
  • Iterate the projection effect based on the test and light
  • Develop a plan for next week’s setup, including date(weather), time (lighting), props, A/V, and staff support

Week 14  Finish Chapter 1 + 2 and prepare for Chapter 3

  • Set up the projection at the seaside or indoor space around my compound
  • Document video demo for the end of the Spring session
  • Research on environmental sensors, brainwave sensors (potentially with Yutian), and data visualization

Week 15  Start Chapter 3

  • Continue research on the sensors and visualization parts in preparation for the Summer session and reach out to experts as needed
