Met with Sarah this morning. It seems like I’ve been too focused on the output and not enough on the process and research/thesis question. She gave some helpful next steps that I will try to tackle in the coming week:

• Watch some of the Thesis Journals
• Focus in on one/two question(s) to explore
• Dig deeper on those
• Worry less about the “product”
• Document more of the process

During our discussion, we talked about exploring the mind models of other coders. However, I found it challenging to ask them directly as they might feel hesitant to share. To overcome this, Sarah suggested using alternative methods like drawing, sculpting, or using clay to represent their mind models. These unconventional methods proved to be interesting and effective.

Sarah also shared a helpful structure for generating ideas, which involved creating three columns: input, process, and output, and listing items under each category. I could then randomly select items from each column to generate sketches and storyboards for my project prototype.

We also delved into the impact of AI on coding and how it might lead to new metaphors. Sarah recommended addressing fundamental questions related to this topic.

A late post, I’m struggling to get out of the procrastination from spring break.

I had meaningful feedback in last peer meeting:

• Consider making the interface/hardware transparent and clearly showing how everything works together.
• A device example: an electron synthesizer which demonstrates the composition.
• Explore a universal metaphor that can be understood by both coders and non-coders, rather than relying on jargon or technical terms.
• Emphasize the unique community model of open source and how it provides opportunities for collaboration.
• Consider the tension between individual privacy and sharing/collaboration, and find ways to incentivize collaboration instead of secrecy.

I have not been making posts recently due to my habits or writing down all my notes and reflections on a piece of paper and then completely forgetting to input it into the blog. However, I am doing a current check in. So far I’ve attended the two bonus sessions for our Thesis class and have enjoyed being able to hear other’s ideas along with being able to chat about mine.

So far I’ve done some research in installation art along with dance in interactive media art. I had a very interesting chat with Brian this week about what the question of my thesis could be condensed to be, and our discussion ended up being about the exploration behind my thesis. Which in this case is the exploration in how technology can be used to create empathy,  comfortability, and connection with others through my passion of salsa. For my thesis I will be doing a pop-up coffee shop in which I will take different elements of a coffee shop and present them through different technological backgrounds all coming from what I have learned and studied throughout this program. The common theme throughout these options will be how they can present the comfort and peace salsa gives me and why I chose to present them this way.

I have a lot more research and work to do but for now I am happy to have a concrete form of exploration and next steps.

Had a group meeting with Beth and Chelsea during Spring break 🙂

Chelsea went over her current project, and how she’s experiencing with projection mapping. It reminded of the Bisa Butler show in Chicago two years ago. Where the city collaborated with the museum and other design firm to project Bisa’s physical works onto several public space buildings and walls. We talked about the pros and cons about the experience.

Beth then mentioned the Disneyland’s end of the day projection mapping with music and fireworks experience, which I agree is the most successful projection mapping work I’ve ever seen till this day. (just because it’s cheesy doesn’t mean it can’t be amazing).

I then shared about my progress, which is stuck as usual. We started talking about comedy, comedians, and stand up specials. Learned a lot about the common comedians we love as well as some new inspirations.

Hope all is well! I just finished up my 3rd meeting with Beth and Jaye! It was so much fun!

I went over where I was in my process so far and gained a lot of great feedback from both Jaye and Beth! We discussed a bit about projection mapping and then DisneyLand, because Disneyland uses that method on their rides! This is without a doubt something I’m considering when thinking about space, installation, and experience!

Jaye then shared her idea’s, her progress, and overall just feeling really inspired! We talked about Twitter for a bit. We all then began to talk about comedy, comedians, and stand up specials which was great!!

Overall it was a blast, full of laughs, and ideas!

Received positive feedback and have a few questions about next steps

• How do I get access to rooms in Media Commons and lighting equipment? Do I set up / tear down the equipment each day, or can it be worked on for a period of time. Definitely want to explore this as the Spring Show gets closer.
• Who would I contact in Shanghai about using their facilities and lighting systems?
• Any recommendations on people to discuss lighting with?
• How do I cite my meditation influences (Taoism, Tai Chi, Buddhism, Hinduism, Vedas) with thoughtfulness and awareness of my white privileges?
• I’ve been interviewing neurotherapists and psychedelic therapists as a part of the Tech Venture Workshop and Future Labs InnoVention programs. I’ll include those findings in my thesis work.
• Dan O was very helpful in my initial conversation with him, but I also want to be sensitive that he’s on sabbatical. Any advice?

Hi! Quick update!

So this morning I received the green light approval for my thesis proposal and I’m super excited and grateful that the panel saw value in this thesis. It’s always wonderful getting fresh eyes and perspective on an idea, and I always find it super helpful! I received a lot of wonderful feedback from the panelists, and this feedback will help me to continue to think critically about my implementation and process from here on out! 🙂

Most of the feedback received focused mainly on technicality. What is space like? How many projections in what scale? What drawing is projected onto what surface? What is the audio like? Is there more sound or music along with the voice? Is the audience’s position detected? If so, what method is used? Are there any other interactions? What experience do you create with the interactive methods? All of these questions are great and will help me further develop the physical installation process, museum bookings, delivery methods etc. 

I plan to play around more with my projector today, and will upload images later on! I also am playing around with glow in the dark tape for the footsteps to see if it’ll work for the exhibit and installation! 🙂
