Being a IMA Low Res student means you will have access to all NYU has to offer with its global-network! Constantly ranked as the #1 university in the Study Abroad category by U.S. News,<\/a> IMA Low Res students have first-hand experience on what it means. Throughout the program, NYU\u2019s Office for Global Services (OGS)<\/a> helps every student (both U.S. and International) to navigate all the visa processes (e.g. F-1 visa for the US, Schengen visa<\/a> for NYU Berlin, and student visa for China) and travel insurances related to the travel of this program. NYU university housing at reduced student rental rates are also available. IMA Low Res students can travel with ease while focusing on utilizing the equipment and education provided at NYU at each site. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this first in-person session, students establish core fundamentals in programming, electronics, data, interaction design, user experience, production and theory. Emphasis is also placed on conceptual frameworks to facilitate critical engagement and practice-based research. This session is based in Brooklyn within NYU\u2019s Center for New Media, Technology & Arts (MTA) building, which is the home of ITP and other related programs. IMA Low Res students have full access to ITP\u2019s communal makerspace<\/a>, an ideal environment for learning and exploration. Outside of the MTA building, students can take advantage of the diverse and vibrant urban campus that is NYU, including events and workshops at both the Downtown Brooklyn campus<\/a> and the Washington Square campus (Manhattan)<\/a>, which is just a few subway stops away. In addition, students have the opportunity to connect with the extensive NYC-based ITP\/IMA community. As a NYU student in NYC, one can take advantage of the hundreds of cultural events that take place in the city everyday, and enjoy free access to world-class museums and libraries \u2013 there is simply too much to see and do in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

370 Jay St – The Floor<\/strong><\/summary>\n

IMA Low Res utilizes the ITP\/IMA space during the summer session. You can check out all the resources (the Shop, Design Lab, Coding Lab, Micro Studio, Doc Lab, The ER, and many more) here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Tisch School of the Arts<\/strong><\/strong><\/summary>\n

As a part of the Tisch School of the Arts, IMA Low Res students also get to access additional resources offered by the School. Previous students had participated in Tisch Initiative For Creative Research<\/a><\/strong> and Tisch\u2019s Graduate Student Organization<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

The University<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/summary>\n

As a NYU student, the whole city is your campus during your time in New York. For instance, NYU students can access many museums and cultural institutions for free<\/a>. More opportunities exclusively for NYU students can also be found on the university website.

Students have full access to NYU buildings and resources around the Washington Square campus, Examples of programs previous Low Res students have got involved with: NYU Tandon Future Labs<\/a>, MakerSpace<\/a>, NYU Stern Berkley Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a>, NYU Ability Project<\/a>, Wasserman Center for Career Development<\/a> <\/strong>and many more.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Summer Housing<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> at NYC<\/strong><\/summary>\n

While students have the option to find their own summer housing in New York City, IMA Low Res students can choose to stay at the NYU Othmer Residence Hall<\/a> in Brooklyn. The housing is right across the 370 Jay St campus, providing easy commute to class during your summer session.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

During the second in-person session, students get to connect with the local community of emerging media artists, designers and thinkers in Berlin, Germany. Berlin is unique within Europe as it\u2019s the only city where one can truly experience both Eastern and Western Europe. The city is also famous for its youth culture and is full of art and artists. With the support of NYU Berlin<\/a>, IMA Low Res students get to have a deeper understanding of the city and how the historical and present environment is in conversation with the city\u2019s art scene. In terms of curriculum, students get to choose a range of different courses and learn new tools depending on their interests and needs. Towards the end of this session, students start setting the foundation for their individual thesis projects as well as developing topical and thematic directions for collaborative Spring course work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NYU Berlin<\/strong><\/summary>\n

During the winter session, NYU Berlin Academic Center <\/a>will be the home away from home for all students. Together with an incredible community of NYU ITP\/IMA alumni in the city, students get to experience the city and its vibrant arts & technology scene.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

During this final in-person session, students get to explore China and its emerging technology & arts scene, while also finishing their thesis projects with the support from expert locals and international faculty advisors. Students have full access to NYU Shanghai\u2019s IMA\u2019 communal makerspace<\/a> for production, prototyping and user-testing. With the support of NYU Shanghai, students can have endless opportunities for immersion in both the commercial and cultural activities of Shanghai and surrounding areas. An optional trip from Shanghai to Shenzhen \u2013 an epicenter of design, manufacturing and innovation is also part of the session’s programming. The session ends with a thesis presentation followed by a public thesis exhibition<\/a>.

There will also be a thorough orientation to prepare every student for their summer in Shanghai before the session starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NYUSH IMA Department<\/strong><\/summary>\n

IMA Low Res utilizes the IMA space at NYU Shanghai during the summer session. You can check out all the resources (the Equipment Room, the Studios, the Fabrication Lab, Wood Shop, Remakerspace, Screening Room, Lighting Studio, XR Room, and many more) here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

NYU Shanghai Campus<\/strong><\/summary>\n

As China\u2019s first Sino-US research university and the third degree-granting campus of the NYU Global Network, the school was founded in 2012 by New York University and East China Normal University with the support of the city of Shanghai and the district of Pudong. Built in 2022, the New Bund Campus serves as NYU Shanghai\u2019s main campus and is located in the Qiantan (the New Bund) neighborhood of Pudong District, near Shanghai\u2019s new hub of finance, technology, and other key industries. The building received a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)<\/a> Gold rating in 2023. You can watch the virtual campus tour here<\/a>.

During the summer session, IMA Low Res students have full access to campus facilities, including a 4,000-square-meter library, a 4,000-square-meter athletics center<\/a>, an on-campus cafeteria offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a variety of Chinese, Western, Vegetarian, and Halal food options, and cafes around the campus serving free brewed coffee. Additionally, the Student Health Center<\/a> on campus will assist you with any health-related concerns. The campus is also within walking distance of the Oriental Sports Center Metro Station on Lines 6\/8\/11, providing students easy access to explore the greater Shanghai metropolitan area.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n

Summer Housing at NYU Shanghai<\/strong><\/summary>\n

While students have the option to find their own summer housing in Shanghai, IMA Low Res students can choose to stay at the Jingyao Residency Hall<\/a> located in the Houtan area of Pudong District. The residential hall is within walking distance of the campus, but there will also be a daily shuttle running between the campus and the residential hall in the morning.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

IMA Low Res students are able to access any \u201ccommunal\u201d NYU facilities, such as the library, gym or any other non-program owned space at both NYU New York and NYU Shanghai even during remote semesters. At any NYU site, if there is an event, talk or workshop open to NYU students and\/or community members, IMA Low Res students are welcomed and encouraged to attend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For spaces that are managed by individual schools\/departments\/programs at either location, access is at their discretion. Access to other NYU Global sites is at the discretion of each individual site. If you have specific needs or interests, please let us know and we will do our best to offer support. The general expectation is that IMA Low Res students will be working on their own during the Fall and Spring semesters. Regardless of where you may reside, we will do our best to offer support and recommend spaces and resources to utilize when the program is not in residence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*For the summer session in New York, non-US students enter the United States via an F-1 Visa. This visa allows for entry up to 30 days prior to the start date of the program and an exit date of up to 60 days after the program end date.
