Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria (JKU) and
\nUniversity of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (UAS), at the Campus
\nSoftwarepark Hagenberg, offer a Joint International PhD Program in
\nComputer Science covering a broad range of special areas in both
\nfundamental and applied research. In this context, we are offering
\nseveral funded PhD positions in
\ncomputer science in the form of scholarships or research employments.<\/div>\n
The Joint International PhD Program in Computer
\nScience offers:<\/div>\n
* A defined, but flexible curriculum for PhD
\nstudents guiding them towards their thesis but supporting personal
\nadaptations with regards to previous experience and the respective
\ntopic.<\/div>\n
* Access to the postgraduate courses and laboratories\/facilities
\nat both JKU and UAS.<\/div>\n
* Full integration of PhD students into
\ninternationally renowned research groups within JKU and UAS.<\/div>\n

\nCompetitive salaries matching the FWF Austrian Science Fund PhD

—————— Security in Ubicomp Project Description
\n——————–<\/div>\n
User Authentication Framework for Mobile Devices<\/div>\n
Current
\nmobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets, or laptops are equipped
\nwith increasing local storage and computation capabilities and are
\ntherefore use to store more and more personal and sometimes highly
\nsensitive information. In addition to the data privacy issues, device
\ntheft is becoming a secondary issue, driven by the increasing resale
\nvalue of mobile phones.<\/div>\n
Aims and Scope<\/div>\n
In this PhD project, the main
\naim is therefore to analyze possibilities of and develop a framework
\nfor user authentication on mobile phones. Examples for such
\nauthentication methods are:<\/div>\n
* code entry in various forms (e.g.
\nPIN code, password, or pattern on 2D board)<\/div>\n
* face
\nrecognition using the built-in camera<\/div>\n
* voice (speaker)
\nrecognition using the built-in microphone<\/div>\n
* explicit gesture
\nrecognition using the built-in accelerometer, magnetometer, and
\ngyroscope<\/div>\n
* implicit gait recognition using the built-in
\naccelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope<\/div>\n
* fingerprint recognition<\/div>\n
Research
\nGoals:<\/div>\n
The outcome of the associated PhD thesis should be a framework
\nfor such sensor-based and probabilistic user authentication as well as
\ninitial implementations for some of the specific authentication methods.
\nA secondary research challenge is the usage of fuzzy cryptography
\nmethods to exploit biometric other otherwise sensor-based authentication
\ninformation for on-device encryption of sensitive data. This is an open
\nissue for all current user authentication methods that do not rely on
\nentering a (long) password that can be re-used to directly derive
\nencryption keys. All other methods can currently not be combined with
\non-device encryption and therefore constitute a security threat.<\/div>\n
Project
\nContext:<\/div>\n
This research topic is part of a larger research
\ninitiative at FH Hagenberg to develop, implement, and study security
\narchitectures, techniques, and method especially for mobile devices. A
\nresearch laboratory with up to 10 PhD positions is planned to be
\nestablished within the next 2 years.<\/div>\n
