Internship at Metropolitan \u2013Health and Hospitals Corporation
\n(Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Occupational Therapy)<\/p>\n
This internship will provide an immersive clinical environment for assistive technology
\ndevelopers in an acute inpatient and outpatient adult and pediatric rehabilitation setting.\u00a0 Interns
\nwill learn to identify clinical needs through in-service\/lectures on various diagnoses, supervised
\npatient interactions and observations and collaboration with the rehabilitation team.\u00a0 Once
\nclinical needs are identified, the intern, along with an OT assistive technology developer,\u00a0 will
\ntake an active role in the early stages of assistive device development, in direct user testing, and
\nin prototype redevelopment.\u00a0 Interns will also be expected to utilize their background knowledge
\nto improve upon assistive devices currently in use at the facility.
\n(Required knowledge:\u00a0 Physical computing, programming, interest in assistive technology
\ndevelopment a MUST)
\n(Preferred knowledge:\u00a0 3D software development, mobile applications)<\/p>\n
PROJECTS FOR SPRING SEMESTER:<\/p>\n
1. Prototype redevelopment of an upper extremity motor control assessment and treatment
\ndevice.\u00a0 This device will be used by neurological patients who are regaining lost upper
\nlimb function.\u00a0 The device will provide creative visual and auditory feedback in response
\nto movement.\u00a0 The device is required to be wireless, lightweight, easy to don\/doff, and
\nnot impede movement.<\/p>\n
2. Prototype development of a head control attachment for a manual wheelchair (A special
\ncase project for a child with cerebral palsy).\u00a0 This project aims\u00a0 to document changes in
\nthe child\u2019s postural and head control, and to promote improvements of these skills by
\nproviding a personalized, motivating, interactive, age-appropriate, non-obtrusive tool that
\nwould respond to the child\u2019s head movements.<\/p>\n
