Research Fellow in Gaming, Learning, and Motivation<\/p>\n
SciPlay at the New York Hall of Science<\/p>\n
SciPlay, the Sara Lee Schupf Family Center for Play, Science, and Technology
\nLearning, located at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), is searching for a
\nresearch fellow for a leadership role in a new National Science Foundation-
\nfunded project in the Research and Evaluation on Education in Science and
\nEngineering program, \u201cInvestigating the Capacity of Game-based Design
\nElements to Enhance Affective Dimensions of Genetics Learning.\u201d The project
\nwill systematically investigate changes in learning (high school genetics) and
\nmotivation when game-based elements of narrative, conflict, and community
\nare added to a project-based science curriculum (designed around Concord
\nConsortium\u2019s well-researched dragon breeding software). This project is in
\ncollaboration with Concord Consortium, Parsons The New School of Design,
\nFilament Games, Michigan State University, New York University, and New York
\nCity Department of Education.<\/p>\n
Position Responsibilities:<\/p>\n
Coordinate and contribute to the design of the game-based interventions
\nConstruct measures to capture changes in science learning and motivation
\nLead the planning and execution of the research study
\nOversee data collection
\nAnalyze data using mixed methods
\nPrepare publications and reports on findings
\nPresent findings at national conferences
\nServe as liaison to participating schools<\/p>\n
Requirements:<\/p>\n

Education research experience conducting trials and analyzing data using
\nmixed methods
\nKnowledge of measures of motivation
\nExperience with statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, or STATA
\nExcellent written and oral communication skills
\nAbility to work well with a team comprised of a diversity of disciplines
\nIdeal candidates have (or will soon complete) a Ph.D. in the learning
\nsciences, science education, psychology, or a related field.
\nCandidates with a Master\u2019s degree in one of the above areas with
\nsignificant experience conducting related educational research are also
\nencouraged to apply.
\nKnowledge of high school biology, in particular genetics, is a plus.
\nExperience designing instruction and\/or teaching science is a plus.
\nDemonstrated interest in informal science learning is a plus.<\/p>\n
Salary is commensurate with qualifications: $50,000 – $60,000 with full<\/p>\n
benefits. The position is full-time for a maximum of three years, starting
\nSeptember 2011.<\/p>\n

SciPlay is a national center that aims to advance our understanding of how to
\npromote science learning through play. SciPlay pursues a program of design-
\nbased research, designing playful learning environments and studying the impact
\nof such environments in NYSCI\u2019s natural laboratory to educe design principles
\nfor playful science learning. Ultimately, SciPlay applies its findings to develop
\nand disseminate new approaches, to bridge informal and formal science learning
\nenvironments to build a seamless national infrastructure for lifelong science
