Research Fellow in Playful Learning<\/p>\n
SciPlay at the New York Hall of Science<\/p>\n
SciPlay, the Sara Lee Schupf Family Center for Play, Science, and Technology
\nLearning, located at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), is searching for a
\nresearch fellow for a leadership role in a new National Science Foundation-
\nfunded project in the Transforming STEM Learning program, \u201cSciGames:
\nA Technology-enhanced Model for Bridging Informal and Formal Science
\nLearning.\u201d This project focuses on supporting middle school physics learning
\nthrough students playing technology-enhanced playground games and digital
\napps paired to each game. This project is in collaboration with Learning Games
\nNetwork, New York University, Tufts University, New York City Department of
\nParks and Recreation, and New York City Department of Education.<\/p>\n
Position Responsibilities:<\/p>\n
–<\/p>\n
Coordinate the design of technology-enhanced playground games and
\ntheir paired digital apps
\nLead the planning and execution of research studies on playful learning
\nCollect data including observations, prompted verbalization, tests, and
\nsurveys
\nAnalyze data using mixed methods
\nWrite up findings to inform redesign and for summative evaluation
\npurposes
\nPresent findings at national meetings<\/p>\n

Requirements:<\/p>\n

Design-based research experience designing science curricula and\/or
\nscience learning environments
\nEducation research experience conducting trials and analyzing data using
\nmixed methods
\nExperience analyzing observational data using a rubric
\nProficiency with statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, or STATA
\nExcellent written and oral communication skills
\nAbility to work well with a team from a diversity of disciplines
\nIdeal candidates have (or will soon complete) a Ph.D. in the learning
\nsciences, science education, psychology, museum studies, or related field.
\nCandidates with a Master\u2019s degree in one of the above areas or in a STEM
\ndiscipline with significant experience conducting educational research are
\nalso encouraged to apply.
\nPrior experience in informal science learning is a plus.
\nPrior experience teaching science is a plus.<\/p>\n

Salary is commensurate with qualifications: $50,000 – $60,000 with full
\nbenefits. The position is full-time for a maximum of two years, starting<\/p>\n
September 2011.<\/p>\n

SciPlay is a national center that aims to advance our understanding of how to

\nfor playful science learning. Ultimately, SciPlay applies its findings to develop
\nand disseminate new approaches, to bridge informal and formal science learning
\nenvironments to build a seamless national infrastructure for lifelong science
