{"id":11247,"date":"2012-02-28T15:42:23","date_gmt":"2012-02-28T19:42:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=11247"},"modified":"2012-02-28T15:42:23","modified_gmt":"2012-02-28T19:42:23","slug":"call-marina-59-residency-program-space-for-lhnm-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2012\/02\/28\/call-marina-59-residency-program-space-for-lhnm-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"[CALL] Marina 59 residency program, space for LHNM summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BOAT RECLAMATION RESIDENCY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are seeking four artists\/collaborations\/ collectives to renovate abandoned boats that will be used in the 2012 season of the Boatel during a six week period.\u00a0 The residency begins April 1 (flexible) and ends May 15.\u00a0 A gallery reception at the Art Bloc shipping container gallery on the premises will take place on Friday May 18.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Boatel is a fleet of refurbished abandoned boats clustered around a floating platform.\u00a0 For a small donation, visitors can stay abroad a private vessel for the night, be entertained by a movie or lecture, and paddle out into the basin.\u00a0 It was entirely booked last summer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Applicants should have an interest in interior design, architecture, and re-use, as well as the ability to fabricate their designs independently.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of our newly salvaged boats are gutted, others have existing interiors.<\/p>\n<p>Design proposals should consider functionality.\u00a0 The structural integrity of the boats should not be compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Artists will have a modest budget to go towards materials and access to our collection of reclaimed materials (wood, boat parts, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Each boat will have water &amp; electric hookups by opening date.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ACCOMMODATIONS<\/strong><a name=\"135c4b8075c9c565_135c0b2880300f6b_135c0079eebfc13f_1359c1f1596b36f8_1359c1231b73608b_1359bfda0b9b1937_1358ce2a6db8155e_1358cc1293c1e59a__GoBack\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Artists will be able to stay part-time or full-time in a boat with water &amp; electricity for the duration of the project.\u00a0 The marina is gated with electronic access for members only.\u00a0 There is car parking inside the gate.<\/p>\n<p>We have new bathroom and shower facilities on land.\u00a0 We\u2019re currently working on laundry facilities and wi-fi throughout the marina.\u00a0 Artists will have access to a communal mess and outdoor grill area, and can opt to take part in rotating crew dinners.<\/p>\n<p>The beach is five blocks away.\u00a0 You are also welcome to bring a kayak or canoe to explore Jamaica Bay, or use one of ours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>INTERNS &amp; ARTISANS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>+ We also have work\/trade positions available for those interested in assisting with construction and maintenance of the Boatel. Duration and terms negotiable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>+ Artisans, especially those working with repurposed materials, are also sought for specific aspects of the Boatel decor and souvenir shop.\u00a0 (Deck chair makers, sign painters, fake flower arrangers, fancy swimwear designers, postcard artists, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>+ Contact us with ideas for workshops, lectures, and film screenings for this season\u2019s calendar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ABOUT MARINA 59<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MARINA 59 is a boatyard in Far Rockaway, Queens.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be a run-down marina is now being converted into an accessible and affordable getaway, just an hour by train from Manhattan or Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>We offer boat slips and storage, motorboat and kayak rentals, Boatel stays, and residency opportunities.\u00a0 We also book events and offer space for parties, workshops, after-school programs, lectures, and outdoor film screenings.\u00a0 On the grounds there is an art gallery made by ArtBloc from converted shipping containers, the Great Escape Boat Bar, a general store, &amp;
