\nSOFTWARE ENGINEER<\/p>\n
We are seeking to hire a software engineer to join our software development team
\nin a highly collaborative group of researchers with partnerships among The Nature
\nConservancy, World Wildlife Fund, Institute on the Environment at the University
\nof Minnesota, and Stanford University. We are developing a tool that will become
\nthe basis of planning land use decisions in protecting and restoring watersheds around
\nurban areas in Latin America and this position will help support the development and
\ndeployment of that tool.<\/p>\n
We offer a flexible academic work environment on the vibrant Stanford campus. Our
\nteam focuses on developing high quality open source code and follows pragmatic
\nprogramming practices as well as the option to work on a 20% side project.<\/p>\n
Principal Responsibilities:<\/p>\n
The Software Engineer will support the development of the InVEST (Integrated
\nValuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) family of software tools by
\nimplementing mathematical models of environmental services and water funds
\nprioritization into software with the specific focus on the functional and usability of those
\ntools. Other job functions include writing test suites, fixing software bugs, implementing
\nnew features, writing documentation, participating in code reviews, and supporting
\ninternal project management tools for the development team.<\/p>\n
The successful candidate will be an intelligent, self-directed individual who is passionate
\nabout working on collaborative software projects. The candidate will need the ability to
\nadapt to new technologies and be able to prioritize work across a variety of outstanding
\ntasks.<\/p>\n
Required Qualifications:<\/p>\n
B.S. in computer science, or related discipline
\nExperience developing a large software application for production. Relevant
\nprojects can include course capstone projects for recent graduates.
\nStrong understanding of core computer science algorithms and computational
\ncomplexity.
\nExperience developing user interfaces.<\/p>\n
Preferred Qualifications:<\/p>\n
Experience with web design and JavaScript.
\nM.S. in computer science, or related discipline.
\nExperience with software project collaboration techniques such as bug\/feature
\ntracking databases and revision control tools.
\nExperience with numerical\/scientific computing.
\nExperience with scientific visualization techniques.
\nExperience working with and\/or maintaining open source software projects.
\nExperience with GDAL, OGR, Geoserver, and\/or PostGIS.
\nFamiliarity with C, Fortran, Python, and\/or Cython.<\/p>\n
Term: Through August 30, 2013 and beyond, contingent upon funding.<\/p>\n
Location: The position is located in Palo Alto, California at Stanford University and will
\nrequire extensive interaction with interdisciplinary teams and travel within the US and
\nLatin America.<\/p>\n
