We are developing a tool that will become<br \/>\nthe basis of planning land use decisions in protecting and restoring watersheds around<br \/>\nurban areas in Latin America and this position will help support the development and<br \/>\ndeployment of that tool.<\/p>\n<p>We offer a flexible academic work environment on the vibrant Stanford campus. Our<br \/>\nteam focuses on developing high quality open source code and follows pragmatic<br \/>\nprogramming practices as well as the option to work on a 20% side project.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Responsibilities:<\/p>\n<p>The Software Engineer will support the development of the InVEST (Integrated<br \/>\nValuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs) family of software tools by<br \/>\nimplementing mathematical models of environmental services and water funds<br \/>\nprioritization into software with the specific focus on the functional and usability of those<br \/>\ntools. Other job functions include writing test suites, fixing software bugs, implementing<br \/>\nnew features, writing documentation, participating in code reviews, and supporting<br \/>\ninternal project management tools for the development team.<\/p>\n<p>The successful candidate will be an intelligent, self-directed individual who is passionate<br \/>\nabout working on collaborative software projects. The candidate will need the ability to<br \/>\nadapt to new technologies and be able to prioritize work across a variety of outstanding<br \/>\ntasks.<\/p>\n<p>Required Qualifications:<\/p>\n<p>B.S. in computer science, or related discipline<br \/>\nExperience developing a large software application for production. Relevant<br \/>\nprojects can include course capstone projects for recent graduates.<br \/>\nStrong understanding of core computer science algorithms and computational<br \/>\ncomplexity.<br \/>\nExperience developing user interfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Preferred Qualifications:<\/p>\n<p>Experience with web design and JavaScript.<br \/>\nM.S. in computer science, or related discipline.<br \/>\nExperience with software project collaboration techniques such as bug\/feature<br \/>\ntracking databases and revision control tools.<br \/>\nExperience with numerical\/scientific computing.<br \/>\nExperience with scientific visualization techniques.<br \/>\nExperience working with and\/or maintaining open source software projects.<br \/>\nExperience with GDAL, OGR, Geoserver, and\/or PostGIS.<br \/>\nFamiliarity with C, Fortran, Python, and\/or Cython.<\/p>\n<p>Term: Through August 30, 2013 and beyond, contingent upon funding.<\/p>\n<p>Location: The position is located in Palo Alto, California at Stanford University and will<br \/>\nrequire extensive interaction with interdisciplinary teams and travel within the US and<br \/>\nLatin America.<\/p>\n<p>How to Apply: Interested applicants will apply online on Stanford University\u2019s job site at<br \/>\njobs.stanford.edu, Job ID #46695 to be considered.
