{"id":11367,"date":"2012-03-19T16:33:26","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T20:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=11367"},"modified":"2012-03-19T16:33:26","modified_gmt":"2012-03-19T20:33:26","slug":"job-moma-studio-teaching-apprenticeship-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2012\/03\/19\/job-moma-studio-teaching-apprenticeship-program\/","title":{"rendered":"JOB: MOMA Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Museum of Modern Art<br \/>\nStudio Teaching Apprenticeship Program<br \/>\nJune 2012-April 2013<\/p>\n<p>MoMA\u2019s Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program provides emerging museum and arts<br \/>\neducators with a paid opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience and mentorship with<br \/>\nveteran teaching artists and museum education staff. Teaching Apprentices work as assistants<br \/>\nwithin MoMA\u2019s teen art program, In the Making. In the Making provides free six- to ten-week<br \/>\nart classes for NYC teens that explore modern and contemporary art through an investigation<br \/>\nof various art-making techniques. Students have the opportunity to discuss artworks in MoMA\u2019s<br \/>\ncollection, meet practicing artists and curators, visit NYC cultural organizations, collaborate with<br \/>\nother NYC teens on studio activities, and create self-directed works of art. Emphasis is placed on<br \/>\nexperimentation, discussion, and engagement with social issues relevant to youth participants.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities:<br \/>\n&#8211; Assist the Lead Educator with teaching and management of one six-week summer class,<br \/>\none ten-week fall class, and one ten-week spring class.<br \/>\no Summer classes meet from either 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or 2:00-5:00 p.m. every<br \/>\nTuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from July 5th through August 12th<br \/>\no Fall classes meet from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on either Tuesdays or Thursdays from early<br \/>\nOctober through mid-December<br \/>\no Spring classes meet from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on either Tuesday or Thursdays from<br \/>\nearly February through mid-May.<br \/>\n&#8211; Duties may include setting up projects, working closely with students on various<br \/>\nstudio projects, documenting the class, assisting with the final exhibit, facilitating<br \/>\ngroup discussions connected to MoMA\u2019s Collections, assisting with some curriculum<br \/>\ndevelopment, maintaining supply lists and cleanup, working closely with Museum<br \/>\neducators, and participating in field trips.<br \/>\n&#8211; Manage Open Studio sessions when students work independently on projects<br \/>\no Summer: Select Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00-5:00 p.m. July<br \/>\n14-August 11\u2014weekly schedule varies<br \/>\no Fall\/Spring: Mondays from 4:00-6:30 p.m.<br \/>\n&#8211; Attend educator training sessions with MoMA Education staff<br \/>\no Summer: short training in late June, dates TBD<br \/>\no Fall\/Spring: one-day training prior to each semester plus bi-weekly reflection<br \/>\nmeetings on select Fridays from 2-3:30 p.m.<br \/>\n&#8211; Additional responsibilities, based upon the interests and previous experience of the<br \/>\nTeaching Apprentices, may include the following:<br \/>\no Creating short videos documenting student work<br \/>\no Contributing to social networking strategies<br \/>\no T-shirt design and printing<br \/>\no Conducting primary research about the benefits of teen art programs<\/p>\n<p>Additional Benefits: In addition to actual teaching responsibilities, Teaching Apprentices<br \/>\nare offered supplemental training opportunities throughout the year to introduce museum<\/p>\n<p>education strategies. These may include the following:<br \/>\n&#8211; Opportunity to assist with other MoMA Education programs, including Community and<br \/>\nAccess Programs, Family Programs, and Public Programs.<br \/>\n&#8211; Possible opportunity to serve as a Teaching Assistant for one of MoMA\u2019s Adult Courses.<br \/>\n&#8211; Opportunity to learn about museum\/youth program administration.<br \/>\n&#8211; Visits with other museum education departments across New York City.<br \/>\n&#8211; Special curatorial tours of MoMA exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility: Ideal candidates should hold a B.A. of B.F.A. in Art, Art Education, Museum Education<br \/>\nor a related field. Applicants should have an interest in Museum Education and\/or studio<br \/>\nart education with a strong desire to work with teen audiences.
