The<br \/>\ntargeted site focuses on the main entrance to the Hassenfeld Pediatric Center, a<br \/>\ndedicated children\u2019s hospital within the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion. The<br \/>\npurpose of this project is to create an iconic, dynamic and child-friendly sculpture<br \/>\nwhich welcomes patients, visitors and Medical Center personnel. The piece will be<br \/>\nseen from many different points of view including First Avenue, East 34th\u00a0Street and<br \/>\nthe FDR Drive. In view of the prominence of this location, this is an opportunity for a<br \/>\n\u2018signature\u2019 sculpture with the potential of becoming an emblem for the Hassenfeld<br \/>\nPediatric Center.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><br \/>\nOpen to practicing artists in the United States who meet the following minimum<br \/>\neligibility qualifications:<br \/>\n\u2022 Applicants must be practicing visual artists. Applications from architects,<br \/>\nlandscape architects or other design professionals will not be considered<br \/>\nunless included as part of an artist-led team.<br \/>\n\u2022 Completion of at least two specific projects using permanent materials in an<br \/>\nexterior environment.<br \/>\n\u2022 Experience working cooperatively with multiple professionals including but not<br \/>\nlimited to architects, engineers and project personnel.<br \/>\n\u2022 Experience in the installation of, or ability to oversee the installation of, the<br \/>\ncommissioned artwork.<br \/>\n\u2022 Ability to comply with project deadlines and budgets as indicated below.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\nProject Background<\/strong><br \/>\nCentral to NYU Langone\u2019s campus transformation is the new, state-of-the-art<br \/>\n830,200-square-foot Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion (Kimmel Pavilion), on<br \/>\ntrack to break ground in 2013. The construction of this facility will be a major step in<br \/>\nour sweeping Medical Center-wide transformation focused on modernization,<br \/>\nbeautification, increasing efficient patient flow, and providing more community-based<br \/>\nambulatory care services.<\/p>\n<p>Rising 22 stories, the Kimmel pavilion will contain 374 patient beds and 32 operating<br \/>\nrooms designed to help meet the anticipated needs of the Medical Center\u2019s<br \/>\nincreasing higher-acuity patient population. The building will also be \u201cgreen\u201d in every<br \/>\nsense, and will include a landscaped roof garden on the 7th\u00a0floor overlooking the<br \/>\nEast River and affording spectacular 360-degree views of the city.<\/p>\n<p>It will also be home to our dedicated children\u2019s hospital, the Hassenfeld Pediatric<br \/>\nCenter. The Hassenfeld Pediatric Center is a new state-of-the-art pediatric hospital<br \/>\nto be built within the Kimmel Pavilion. Integral to the design of the children\u2019s hospital<br \/>\nare all private rooms, making it the only pediatric inpatient facility in Manhattan to<br \/>\nhave this feature.<\/p>\n<p>The Hassenfeld Pediatric Center will have a dedicated entrance on East 34th\u00a0Street<br \/>\nbetween First Avenue and the FDR Drive, featuring a child-friendly lobby. Other<br \/>\nimportant features include the 7th\u00a0floor Children\u2019s Center, with a Family Center for<br \/>\norientation activities for patients, space for child life activities and support for<br \/>\neducation, respite services for families and a rooftop garden. Sixty-eight inpatient<br \/>\nbeds will be split evenly between acute and critical care. Three dedicated operating<br \/>\nrooms along with observation and peri-op beds round out the clinical program.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Public Art Site<\/strong><br \/>\nThe proposed site is a triangular parcel of lawn parallel to East 34th\u00a0Street adjacent<br \/>\nto the main entrance. The area is approximately 40&#8217;x38&#8217;x14&#8242; and is separated from<br \/>\nthe building by a 28&#8242; wide driveway. (Images of the art site and site plan are on the<br \/>\nnext page of this document.)<\/p>\n<p>NYU Langone Medical Center\u2019s construction manager will prepare the site and<br \/>\nprovide equipment for the artwork installation. The construction manager will<br \/>\ncoordinate with the artist to ensure that all safety and security requirements are met<br \/>\nand that labor harmony is maintained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Public Art Budget<\/strong><br \/>\nThe budget allocated for this project is $500,000, including artist fees, overhead and<br \/>\noperating costs, fabrication, supervision of installation, and all other fees, subconsultant costs, material costs, travel-related costs and associated fees. The Medical Center will be responsible for site preparation, installation, lighting and insurance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Artist Selection Process<\/strong><br \/>\nApplications will be prescreened by members of the NYU Langone Medical Center<br \/>\nArt Program to ensure that applicants meet the minimum qualifications. An Art<br \/>\nCommittee comprised of five voting members will review the applications and<br \/>\nidentify four finalists and two alternates. The finalists will then be invited to develop<br \/>\nDesign Concept Proposals after attending a mandatory artist orientation session with<br \/>\nthe Project Team. Each artist will be paid an honorarium of $3,000 for the<br \/>\ndevelopment of a conceptual design proposal.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Selection Criteria<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Artistic excellence, innovation and originality as evidenced by representations of<br \/>\npast work and other supporting material. This includes theme, craftsmanship and<br \/>\nrelevance to site.<br \/>\n\u2022 Experience with projects of similar scale and scope.\u2022 The artist\u2019s demonstrated ability to translate art concepts into durable and safe<br \/>\nmaterials that are compatible with design standards for permanent construction in an<br \/>\nexterior environment.<br \/>\n\u2022 Evidence that the artist\u2019s existing public artworks have maintained an appropriate<br \/>\nlevel of quality and integrity.<br \/>\n\u2022 Assessed ability to meet project deadlines and to perform work in a timely and<br \/>\nprofessional manner.<br \/>\n\u2022 The artist\u2019s demonstrated ability to work as a member of a project design team.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, artwork commissioned for this opportunity must meet the following<br \/>\ncriteria:<br \/>\n\u2022 Engage patients and families, staff members and the local community.<br \/>\n\u2022 Complement the architecture of the Hassenfeld Pediatric Center and surrounding<br \/>\nlandscape.<br \/>\n\u2022 Reflect the characteristics and culture of the Hassenfeld Pediatric Center and<br \/>\nNYU Langone Medical Center.<br \/>\n\u2022 Embrace the principles of LEED certification gold and sustainability practices.<br \/>\n\u2022 Be appropriate for the hospital environment.<br \/>\n\u2022 Executed in durable materials requiring minimal maintenance.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finalists\u2019 Responsibilities<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Artist or Artist Teams selected to prepare Design Concept Proposals will be<br \/>\nrequired to attend an Artist Orientation Meeting with the Project Team.<br \/>\n\u2022 The conceptual designs must indicate the artists\u2019 design intent, artwork location,<br \/>\nscale, colors, materials and fabrication processes, a preliminary budget based on<br \/>\nreal cost estimates, and project timeline.<br \/>\n\u2022 Preliminary art budgets must include verifiable cost estimates for technical<br \/>\ndesign development, fabrication and\/or fabrication oversight, delivery, installation<br \/>\noversight, sub-consultants, the artist\u2019s fees, and all other related project costs.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Timeline for Artist Selection (subject to change)<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 July 23, 2012: RFQ Poster\/Advertised<br \/>\n\u2022 August 31, 2012: RFQ Submissions Deadline<br \/>\n\u2022 Late Fall 2012: Art Committee Meeting 1 (selection of finalists)<br \/>\n\u2022 Winter 2012: Artist Finalists\u2019 Orientation (mandatory)<br \/>\n\u2022 Spring 2013: Art Committee Meeting 2 (selection of winner)<br \/>\n\u2022 Spring 2013: Selected Artist Notified<br \/>\n\u2022 Summer 2013: Execution of Contract and Letter to Proceed<br \/>\n\u2022 Summer 2017: Installation of ArtSubmissions<br \/>\nInterested artists should submit the following to be received no later than<br \/>\n<strong>August 31, 2012<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Each image dimension should not exceed 800 x 600 pixels. Established artist teams may<br \/>\nsubmit one resume representing their previous collaborative work. First-time<br \/>\ncollaborators must submit a resume\/CV from each team member.
