{"id":12760,"date":"2012-12-05T12:21:04","date_gmt":"2012-12-05T16:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=12760"},"modified":"2012-12-05T12:21:11","modified_gmt":"2012-12-05T16:21:11","slug":"job-director-of-development-design-that-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2012\/12\/05\/job-director-of-development-design-that-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"[JOB] Director of Development, Design that Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>We\u2019re hiring a Director of Development<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Design that Matters (DtM) works with the world\u2019s best social enterprises to create new products and services for the poor in developing countries. \u00a0We have just moved into a new space in Salem, MA. \u00a0In this expanded design studio, we will combine our award-winning design approach with cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to launch breakthrough innovations that combat poverty. \u00a0Our goals are ambitious: the new program will require more resources than we can raise ourselves, so we\u2019re looking for another teammate.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As DtM\u2019s Director of Development, your primary mission will be fundraising. \u00a0DtM has a small but committed group of donors and a dedicated community of professional volunteers&#8211;and 2012 was the best year in the company\u2019s history. \u00a0Building on DtM\u2019s results, reputation and community, you will develop new sources of program support and long-term growth capital.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You believe that money follows attention. \u00a0You love telling stories. \u00a0You\u2019re familiar with the ways in which a small organization can maintain a steady stream of attention in an environment that is saturated with design and innovation, and where there are many similar programs that are also doing good work.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You know that it takes more than money to sustain an organization like ours. \u00a0You understand that accomplishing our mission requires attracting people willing to contribute their expertise for free, or at rates well below what they could charge in the for-profit sector. \u00a0You love throwing parties, and you write excellent thank-you letters.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You have a depth of expertise, but you\u2019re excited to take on challenges well outside your experience. \u00a0You\u2019re comfortable socializing in the kitchen of a major donor, and with figuring out the latest social media web app. \u00a0You enjoy collaborating with a team, but you\u2019re also a good fit with DtM&#8217;s culture of self-education and DIY. \u00a0You know that a small office means we\u2019re all closer to the day-to-day work, from scheduling our own calendars and posting our own FedEx packages, to arranging the cheese plate for an after-hours office event. \u00a0Although our current donor and volunteer community is mostly local, you\u2019re available to travel periodically, both in the US and overseas.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You\u2019ve done this job before, and you\u2019ve made a difference. \u00a0You\u2019ve built your own processes to manage a busy pipeline of opportunities. \u00a0Your creative ideas for fundraising, brand development and community management have had an impact on an organization\u2019s bottom line.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Success will mean that by this time next year, you will have generated significantly more diversity in funding sources (individuals, foundations, corporations and government), and increased DtM\u2019s annual core support so we can expand our capacity and our global impact.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>HOW TO APPLY<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Email a cover letter and work experience to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:info@designthatmatters.org\" target=\"_blank\">info@designthatmatters.org<\/a>. \u00a0Please put \u201c[RD]\u201d in the subject line of your email so we can filter your application.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In your letter, please include answers to the following three questions:<\/div>\n<div>1.
