This is an extension of the Edupunks\u2019 Guide, supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edupunksguide.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gates Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Higher education is a vast and complex enterprise comprising varying missions, models and types of participants. Time and again, discussions over the future of the enterprise between, say, Ivy League classics professors and for-profit purveyors of online community college courses get bogged down in mutual incomprehension. In numerous<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=i6MLLkmXee0\" target=\"_blank\">presentations<\/a>\u00a0over\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/WascSenior\/anya-kamenetz-diyu-at-the-2011-wasc-arc\" target=\"_blank\">the<\/a><wbr>\u00a0past two<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/Anyaanya\/diyu-educause\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0years<\/a>, I have presented as a framework, adapted from my book DIY U,\u00a0 three major buckets of benefits that higher education provides to students: Content, Socialization, and Accreditation; and three major challenges to traditional models: Cost, Access, and Quality\/Relevance.<br \/>\nThe Edupunks\u2019 Atlas of Lifelong Learning will use this framework as a starting point to create a beautiful full-color graphic map of the current landscape of higher education innovations, and variations on the theme. The Atlas will be made public at<a href=\"http:\/\/edupunksguide.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">edupunksguide.org<\/a>\u00a0and as a free shareable graphic. The field is moving fast so I hope to create a framework that can be updated.<br \/>\nThis is a speculative description of how I\u2019d like it to work:<\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>Each spot on the map will have a name and link to an organization and thick or thin lines will connect<br \/>\nrelated organizations. The overall effect will be a graphic way to understand where a given<br \/>\ninnovation falls within the universe of options in further education. Over 200 organizations will<br \/>\nbe represented on the atlas.<br \/>\nDimensions shown on the map could include any or all of the following:<\/p>\n<p>Traditional&lt;\u2014-&gt;Experimental<\/p>\n<p>Experiential&lt;\u2013&gt;Hybrid&lt;\u2013&gt;Online<\/p>\n<p>Size\/share of market<\/p>\n<p>Benefit Mix e.g.; Content-Socialization-<wbr>Accreditation (ASU Online); Content (Open Courseware);<br \/>\nContent-Socialization (MOOC, P2PU); Socialization (OpenStudy, CityYear); Socialization-Accreditation<br \/>\n(Github); Accreditation (LearningCounts.org)<\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>Within Accreditation:<\/p>\n<p>Unit of Study e.g.; (Lesson\u2013&gt;Course\u2013&gt;<wbr>Certification\u2013&gt;Degree)<\/wbr><\/p>\n<p>Traditional, Nontraditional (Badge, Portfolio), Informal<\/p>\n<p>Funding model e.g.; Nonprofit-within existing university, Nonprofit-state-funded, nonprofit-<br \/>\nmixed, For-profit-publicly traded, For-profit-venture, Nonprofit-venture<\/p>\n<p>Audience e.g.; High-Schoolers Transitioning; Elite-Grad; Elite-Undergrad; Mass-Traditional Age; Mass-Adult Learner; Mass-<br \/>\nReturning; Mass-Educated Adult<\/p>\n<p>Business model e.g.; Tuition&amp;Philanthropic; Tuition-only; Free-philanthropic; Freemium;<br \/>\nPlatform (data-advertising); Vendor<\/p>\n<p>Content policy e.g.; (CC-BY, CC-BY-NC, Traditional copyright)<\/p>\n<p>Pedagogical model e.g.; (One to many; many to many; Independent learning; Experiential;project based)<br \/>\nAnd maybe a few more I\u2019m not thinking of.<\/p>\n<p>I need to find an awesome designer with interest in this field to help me think through and realize this graphic.
