{"id":1309,"date":"2009-03-03T15:51:42","date_gmt":"2009-03-03T19:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=1309"},"modified":"2009-03-03T15:54:15","modified_gmt":"2009-03-03T19:54:15","slug":"spring-break-expedition-to-browning-ranch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2009\/03\/03\/spring-break-expedition-to-browning-ranch\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring Break Expedition to Browning Ranch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> URGENT:\u00a0 This visit is planned for Spring Break March 15-21.\u00a0 You\u00a0 need to respond immediately (3\/3 or 3\/4)\u00a0 in order to make travel arrangements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CL Browning Ranch near Austin, Texas is working on issues of sustainability<br \/>\nand land stewardship.\u00a0\u00a0 ITP has a relationship with the owners and the<br \/>\nmanagers of the ranch who presented last semester in Red&#8217;s Applications<br \/>\nclass.\u00a0 The ranch presents an opportunity for ITP students to learn<br \/>\nabout ecological studies and in general about how science is done.\u00a0\u00a0 In<br \/>\nreturn ITP students might also have key ideas and skills to offer that<br \/>\nare missing in their current efforts to save that environment.\u00a0 Tom Igoe<br \/>\nrecently visited the ranch and saw possibilities for our students to<br \/>\nhelp visualize the large amounts of data being gathered about water<br \/>\nflow, use satellite photographs to inventory plant species,\u00a0 to use computer vision and physical computing in tracking<br \/>\nanimals, or perhaps to build exhibits that make the case of land<br \/>\nconservation to visitors.\u00a0 We are looking for a few students to go down<br \/>\nto the ranch over Spring Break and learn from Scott Gardner, the ranch<br \/>\nmanager and Ted and Betsey Rogers, the owners about what they are doing<br \/>\ndown there, then to find ways to insert themselves in helpful ways.<br \/>\nYour airfare will be covered by ITP and your accommodations will be on<br \/>\nthe ranch.\u00a0 There is a also a small stipend to cover your expenses.\u00a0 If<br \/>\ninteresting projects do come out of it, there would be opportunities for<br \/>\nongoing support.\u00a0 This is coming up very quickly so interested students<br \/>\nshould apply to Dan O&#8217;Sullivan dan.osullivan@nyu.edu<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>URGENT:\u00a0 This visit is planned for Spring Break March 15-21.\u00a0 You\u00a0 need to respond immediately (3\/3 or 3\/4)\u00a0 in order to make travel arrangements.
