{"id":13461,"date":"2013-04-08T12:10:56","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=13461"},"modified":"2013-04-08T12:10:56","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T16:10:56","slug":"teaching-paid-intern-studio-teaching-apprenticeship-program-the-museum-of-modern-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2013\/04\/08\/teaching-paid-intern-studio-teaching-apprenticeship-program-the-museum-of-modern-art\/","title":{"rendered":"[TEACHING \/ PAID INTERN] Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program, The Museum of Modern Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Museum of Modern Art<\/p>\n<p>Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program<\/p>\n<p>June 2013-April 2014<\/p>\n<p>MoMA\u2019s Studio Teaching Apprenticeship Program provides emerging museum and arts\u00a0educators with a paid opportunity to gain hands-on teaching experience and mentorship with\u00a0veteran teaching artists and museum education staff.\u00a0 Teaching Apprentices work as assistants\u00a0within MoMA\u2019s teen art program, <em>In the Making<\/em>. \u00a0<em>In the Making<\/em> provides free six- and ten-week\u00a0art courses for NYC teens that explore modern and contemporary art through an investigation of\u00a0various art-making techniques. Teens have the opportunity to discuss artworks in MoMA\u2019s\u00a0collection, meet practicing artists and curators, visit NYC cultural organizations, collaborate with\u00a0other NYC teens on studio activities, and create self-directed works of art. Emphasis is placed on\u00a0experimentation, discussion, and engagement with social issues relevant to youth participants.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Assist the Lead Educator with teaching and management of one six-week summer class,\u00a0one ten-week fall class, and one ten-week spring class.<\/p>\n<p>o Summer <em>In the Making<\/em> classes meet from either 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or 2:00-5:00\u00a0p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from July 5th through August 12th<\/p>\n<p>o During the fall season, no teen classes are held, but Teaching Apprentices meet\u00a0once a week (for 10 sessions, November \u2013 December) with a MoMA Teaching\u00a0Artist to learn strategies of contemporary museum education, with a focus on in-gallery teaching and multi-lesson syllabus development.<\/p>\n<p>o Spring In#the#Making classes meet from 4:00-6:30 p.m. on either Tuesday or\u00a0Thursdays from early February through mid-May (10 sessions).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Duties may include setting up projects, working closely with students on various studio\u00a0projects, documenting the class, assisting with the final exhibit, facilitating group\u00a0discussions connected to MoMA\u2019s Collections, assisting with some curriculum\u00a0development, maintaining supply lists and cleanup, working closely with Museum\u00a0educators, and participating in field trips.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Attend educator training sessions with MoMA Education staff<\/p>\n<p>o Summer: short training in late June, dates TBD<\/p>\n<p>o Spring: one-day training plus bi-weekly reflection meetings<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Additional responsibilities, based upon the interests and previous experience of the\u00a0Teaching Apprentices, may include the following:<\/p>\n<p>o Creating short videos documenting student work<\/p>\n<p>o Contributing to social networking strategies<\/p>\n<p>o T-shirt design and printing<\/p>\n<p>o Conducting primary research about the benefits of teen art programs<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additional Benefits: In addition to actual teaching responsibilities, Teaching Apprentices are\u00a0offered supplemental training opportunities throughout the year to introduce museum\u00a0education strategies.\u00a0 These may include the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Opportunity to assist with other MoMA Education programs, including Community and\u00a0Access Programs, Family Programs, and Public Programs. \u00a0Possible opportunity to serve as a Teaching Assistant for one of MoMA\u2019s Adult Courses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Opportunity to learn about museum\/youth program administration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Visits with other museum education departments across New York City.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Special curatorial tours of MoMA exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eligibility: Ideal candidates should hold a B.A. of B.F.A. in Art, Art Education, Museum Education\u00a0or a related field.\u00a0 Applicants should have an interest in Museum Education and\/or studio art\u00a0education with a strong desire to work with teen audiences.\u00a0 Applicants should have a\u00a0commitment to developing a career in the arts and have a demonstrated artistic practice. \u00a0Current MFA students preferred.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>A stipend of\u00a0 6500 will be provided.
