The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop is seeking a Spanish-speaking Research\u00a0Associate to help conduct ethnographic fieldwork in the NY-NJ-PA region. The position is part-time\u201412-15 hours per week\u2014for a period of nine months, from January 2014 through\u00a0September 2014. The position is ideal for recent graduates of master\u2019s or doctoral programs in\u00a0Communication, Child Development, Psychology, the Learning Sciences, Education (Educational\u00a0Technology, Anthropology), Sociology, or related fields. We will also consider currently enrolled\u00a0students with substantial research experience.<\/p>\n
Duties<\/p>\n
Field Research<\/p>\n
Data collection tasks will include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Scheduling interviews\/observations<\/p>\n
\u2022 Managing permission slips\/consent forms<\/p>\n
\u2022 Operating video and audio recording equipment<\/p>\n
\u2022 Conducting interviews and observations<\/p>\n
\u2022 Interpreting\/translating Spanish-English for study participants and researchers<\/p>\n
\u2022 Taking field notes<\/p>\n
\u2022 Data logging video tapes<\/p>\n
\u2022 Processing and inventorying paper and electronic data (compressing, labeling, storing)<\/p>\n
Data analysis tasks include:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Transcribing interviews<\/p>\n
\u2022 Translating interviews<\/p>\n
\u2022 Coding data (video, transcripts, field notes)<\/p>\n
\u2022 Interaction analysis<\/p>\n
\u2022 Drafting analytic memos<\/p>\n
\u2022 Using qualitative data analysis software (e.g., Dedoose)<\/p>\n
Writing and Editorial<\/p>\n
\u2022 Conducting background research and drafting text for literature reviews<\/p>\n
\u2022 Using reference management software (e.g., EndNote)<\/p>\n
\u2022 Writing up findings<\/p>\n
\u2022 Copyediting<\/p>\n
Qualifications<\/p>\n
Required<\/p>\n
\u2022 Fluent in Spanish<\/p>\n
\u2022 Master\u2019s (or near) degree in Communications, Education, Psychology, Child Development,\u00a0Learning Sciences, Sociology, or related field<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience using ethnographic research methods, including interviews, observations, and\u00a0taking field notes<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience with administrative aspects of conducting research, including participant\u00a0recruitment, processing and managing data, organizing\/managing consent forms, etc.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Interest in and awareness of key issues in digital media and learning<\/p>\n
\u2022 Fluent with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs<\/p>\n
\u2022 Excellent writing skills; experience proofreading and copy-editing<\/p>\n
\u2022 Three years professional work experience<\/p>\n
\u2022 Attentive to details!<\/p>\n
\u2022 Able to function independently, work in a team environment, manage multiple priorities, and\u00a0meet deadlines<\/p>\n
\u2022 Sense of humor and diplomatic skills<\/p>\n
Desired<\/p>\n
\u2022 PhD (or near) in Communications, Education, Psychology, Child Development, Learning\u00a0Sciences, Sociology, or related field;<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience leading\/managing research projects<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience conducting video analysis, interaction analysis<\/p>\n
\u2022 Interest in and awareness of key issues in any of the following: language and literacy, digital\u00a0equity, family studies, Hispanic families, children\u2019s geographies<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience using iMovie, Final Cut Pro or other video editing software; EndNote or other\u00a0reference management software; Dedoose or other qualitative data analysis software; GIS\u00a0and mapping technologies<\/p>\n
Hours and Pay<\/p>\n
For 12 to 15 hours per week, flexible. Position begins in early January 2014 and runs through September 2014 with the possibility of renewal based upon performance. Rate is negotiable,\u00a0based on experience. When not in the field collecting data, RA would be expected to attend\u00a0meetings at our Manhattan offices near Lincoln Center.<\/p>\n
