{"id":1474,"date":"2009-04-03T16:03:52","date_gmt":"2009-04-03T20:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/?p=1474"},"modified":"2009-04-03T16:03:52","modified_gmt":"2009-04-03T20:03:52","slug":"diybio-a-citizens-call-to-synthesize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\/opportunities\/2009\/04\/03\/diybio-a-citizens-call-to-synthesize\/","title":{"rendered":"DIYbio: A Citizen&#8217;s Call to Synthesize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I working with the collective The Grafting Parlour, as part of the e-MobiLArt on a project which will be exhibited at the 2009 Thessaloniki Biennale, State Museum of Thessaloniki, Greece in May 2009, and will travel to the Academy of Fine Arts in Poland next fall.<br \/>\nOne part of the project: Growing Light and Other Conversations,\u00a0 is a playful scientific experiment which triggers expressive genes in photosensitive bacteria. In other words, a strain of bacteria containing expressive florescent proteins (GFP) responds to interactions by glowing<br \/>\nSubjects that The Grafting Parlour addresses include:<br \/>\n\u2022 Green light bulb:\u00a0 Can photo-reactive yeast be a light bulb?<br \/>\n\u2022 Inter-species communication:\u00a0 what would you say to bacteria?<br \/>\n\u2022 Bacteria as building blocks:\u00a0 what would you make?<\/p>\n<p>Another part: A Citizen&#8217;s Call to Synthesize, is a focus on DIYbio efforts in this area.<br \/>\nWe are collaborating with synthetic biologist Dr. Natalie Kuldell and her MIT laboratory, developing new interfaces to communicate with organism via internet and mobile.<br \/>\nWe are invited\u00a0 to give a workshop this coming Nov. and design a working module with her students. One of the ideas that came up for example, was communicating with bacteria \/ yeast via SMS.<br \/>\nLooking for ITP students to create interesting applications to communicate with bacteria. This could be either part of a class or a project individual students can take on. Which student of course will be credited for.
