\nTHIS IS A 10 MONTH TERM POSITION STARTING JUNE 1, 2009 (WITH THE POSSIBILIT=

\nPosition Objectives<\/p>\n
* This is a key engineering position that requires the ability to probl=
\nem solve and communicate clearly in a highly creative and sometimes intense =
\nworking\/learning environment. Your primary activity will be to provide suppo=
\nrt to the Banff New Media Institute=92s Advanced Research Technology (ART) M=
\nobile Lab in its ongoing research activities. This position reports directly=
\n to the Director\/Executive Producer of BNMI, but receives daily direction fr=
\nom the Senior Mobile Researcher. You will act as the technical lead for the =
\nART Mobile Lab in all areas, including in-house software development project=
\ns, collaborations with external artists and partners, research of emerging t=
\nechnologies and platforms, usability research, technical evaluation, proposa=
\nl writing and dissemination. In particular, you will be responsible for deve=
\nloping software applications for a variety of mobile devices using GPS, wire=
\nless internet, cellular network and sensor input to drive creation and playb=
\nack=20
\nof rich-media content, cross-platform user experiences, and other mobile an=
\nd location-based interactive installations.<\/p>\n
Responsibilities<\/p>\n
* Accountable for the technical aspects of mobile and locative media re=
\nsearch and development and coproduction activity of the BNMI=92s ART Mobile =
\nLab.
\n * Work as the primary engineer on a mixed-discipline team, and facilita=
\nte the specification of the technical development process. Accountable for t=
\nhe Open Source development of the Mobile Experience Engine (MEE)
\n * Manage ongoing unit-testing, bug-tracking, feature-tracking and build=
\n system
\n * Prepare new applications for large-scale beta tests including install=
\nation, documentation and training of users
\n * Code library fa=E7ade elements in Java, C++
\n * Develop and test platform-neutral facades into platform-specific APIs=
\n and code libraries
\n * Translate application designs into XML
\n * Develop XML schema and XSL stylesheets for converting designer-friend=
\nly specifications in XML into XML meeting the Mobile Experience Engine (MEE)=
\n schema
\n * Develop XSL stylesheets for generating SVG-based visualisations of ap=
\nplications for review
\n * Responsible for managing a Linux (Gentoo) web server, Samba file shar=
\ning and performing regular system backups. Work outdoors setting up and test=
\ning mobile and location-based applications and installations in all mountain=
\n conditions =96 rain, shine, or snow.
\n * Provide consulting services and advice to visiting artists, designers=
\n and project collaborators with variable levels of technical knowledge.<\/p>\n
Qualifications<\/p>\n
* Bachelor of Science or better in Computer Science or Engineering is r=
\nequired
\n * 5+ years of experience working with Java programming, Web programming=
\n including PHP
\n * Must have good knowledge of Java, JavaME, C, C++, Linux server admini=
\nstration and management skills, platform knowledge with Netbeans and Websphe=
\nre, Python, C#, JavaScript, PHP. Knowledge of Symbian and competence with X=
\nML, XSL and XML Schema would be an asset Previous experience developing mobi=
\nle applications involving Bluetooth and Wireless connectivity. Knowledge of =
\nJavaME (CLDC and MIDP2) is essential. High level of competence with embedded=
\n programming or small device programming.
\n * Basic understanding of electronics (experience developing electronic =
\ngadgets would be an asset).Requires very strong collaboration skills, specif=
\nically the ability to work and collaborate in a highly interdisciplinary env=
\nironment with non-technical colleagues including artists, designers, researc=
\nhers and academics.
\n * Experience developing for iPhone, OpenMoko, Android and\/or open sourc=
\ne environments would be an asset.<\/p>\n
