The Data Science Intern has a real passion finding business insights in huge\u00a0datasets. Well-qualified candidates are excited by contributing to open source\u00a0projects, by participating in technical communities or interest groups, or by\u00a0writing or speaking in public about their technical ideas. A Data Scientist\u00a0Intern at McKinsey will be an active learner and will enjoy tinkering with new\u00a0open source libraries, using unfamiliar technologies and working with\u00a0interesting data sets in their spare time.<\/p>\n

Exercise: Given a dataset of transactions (100k rows) from a large retailer, find\u00a0groups of items that are frequently purchased together. Each row is a single\u00a0transaction with a ‘1’ denoting that item was in the transaction. Submit your\u00a0findings along with any code\/description of tools used to solve the problem.\u00a0The dataset can be found at http:\/\/bit.ly\/1sCk2vd<\/p>\n
Technical skills and experience<\/p>\n
\u2022 Strong experience using at least one high level programming language (e.g.\u00a0Java, C, C#)<\/p>\n
\u2022 Knowledge of Python (or other scripting language) and databases (Oracle,\u00a0MySQL, MongoDB, etc.)<\/p>\n
\u2022 Experience in any of the following is a plus: machine learning, pattern\u00a0recognition, artificial intelligence, statistics<\/p>\n
\u2022 Knowledge of the agile software development process is a plus\u00a0Non-technical competencies<\/p>\n
\u2022 Strong analytical and problem solving skills paired with the ability to\u00a0develop creative and efficient solutions<\/p>\n
\u2022 Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ability to work both independently and in various team settings<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ability to work under pressure with a solid sense for setting priorities<\/p>\n
