Gallery
\nAferro is an artist owned and operated alternative space founded in
\n2003 by Evonne M. Davis and Emma Wilcox. The mission of Gallery Aferro
\nis to bring cultural education and esthetic engagement with
\ncontemporary issues to all people equally, and to create an environment
\nwhere artists can gather and share physical and intellectual
\nresources. We are working towards an arts community that is available
\nto everyone, without sacrificing quality of experience. <\/span><\/p>\n

Founded in a converted factory building in the Ironbound,
\nGallery Aferro was planned as a pilot project to be recreated in
\ndifferent architectural forms, in multiple American cities.<\/span> The
\ngallery is currently being run out of a donated 4 story building in
\ndowntown Newark. We offer 12 exhibitions a year, featuring local,
\nnational and international artists, a wide variety of events such as
\ninteractive public art projects, performances, talks, film screenings,
\nportfolio reviews and public usage based on the stated needs of the
\ncommunity. We launched our residency program in 2006 and were one of
\nfour nationwide recipients of a 2007 New York State Workspace
\nConsortium grant to improve it. A publishing line has just been
\nlaunched, consisting of exhibition catalogs, original essays, and
\nartist books. <\/span><\/p>\n

Aferro interns have the unique oppo=
\nrtunity to work closely
\nwith staff and the larger arts community in learning all aspects of a
\nnot-for-profit organization, including the details of the day-to-day
\norganization. Due to the intensity of the business, and our strong
\nconnection to the community, the internship position can build
\nexcellent professional skills\/contacts and a breadth of knowledge that
\ngoes well beyond the work involved.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Internships at Aferro are particularly beneficial =
\nto motivated
\nand enthusiastic individuals who are interested in cultivating
\nexhibition, operations and arts administration experience in order to
\ngain work experience and fulfill career goals in the art world. <\/span><\/p>\n

Responsibilities and training could include: design,
\nreception and communications during public hours as well as private
\ntours, curator visits, and artist's studio visits, assisting staff with
\nall aspects related to each of our exhibitions, database development
\nspecial event production, assisting with grant preparations, and
\nvarious arts administration responsibilities. We will be preparing for
\nseveral off-site film screenings, and for next year's Newark Open
\nStudio Tour.
