About the Course<\/p>\n
Explorations in Digital Design is the introductory course for the New Media & Digital<\/p>\n
Design Program and aims to expose undergraduates to the program\u2019s three thematic<\/p>\n
concentrations in the areas social informatics, digital arts, and e-commerce. The course<\/p>\n
critically explores notable histories, geographies, and practices of designing interfaces,<\/p>\n
communication, and information systems. Students gain an introduction to design<\/p>\n
paradigms, internet architecture, and the politics of designing digital media that operate<\/p>\n
at intimate, local, and global scales. Design theory and practice are bridged through<\/p>\n
readings, lectures, hands-on workshops, and developing an interactive design proposal. <\/p>\n
Course Learning Outcomes:<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Students will demonstrate an understanding of digital design theory and practice<\/p>\n
through critical writing, group discussion, and design work;<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Students will understand common web design standards and principles as well as<\/p>\n
basic internet architecture;<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Students will develop an understanding of the logic and potential application of<\/p>\n
common web languages such as CSS, PHP, and HTML.<\/p>\n
Instructor Qualifications:<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Instructor should be knowledgeable in both the study and practice of digital<\/p>\n
design;<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Instructor should be aware of current trends and future trajectories of<\/p>\n
the cultural, aesthetic, and commercial design of graphical user interfaces,<\/p>\n
software agents, and information systems;<\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Instructor should be familiar with common web languages such as CSS, PHP, and<\/p>\n
HTML; <\/p>\n
\uf0b7 Instructor should be able to communicate this knowledge through both in-class<\/p>\n
lectures and design workshops<\/p>\n
The course meets once per week for 2.5 hours, in the evening. Availability<\/p>\n
on Tuesday evenings highly desirable for the coming term.<\/p>\n
