Since 2014, the\u00a0ECAL\/University of Art and Design Lausanne<\/a>\u00a0in Switzerland and the\u00a0EPFL\/Ecole polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/a>\u00a0have offered the opportunity to provide with answers to the challenges raised by advanced technology through the\u00a0Master of Advanced Studies in Design Research for Digital Innovation.<\/b><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Only 3\u20135 candidates are admitted each year for this two-year course.\u00a0Admission is linked to obtaining\u00a0a paid assistant position<\/b>\u00a0at the\u00a0EPFL+ECAL Lab<\/a>\u00a0 the unit which acts as a bridge across the two institutions. The curriculum includes\u00a0advanced courses combining theory and practical projects in such areas as augmented reality, digital information and architecture, disruptive innovation and analysis\u00a0of user experience. More importantly, it allows developing a major research project called upon to become an actual application.<\/p>\n

Candidates have the benefit of the EPFL+ECAL Lab technical platform, as well as of support from the teams of experts located in the ECAL building. They are\u00a0registered as EPFL students, giving them access to the infrastructure of a campus with more than 300 laboratories.<\/p><\/div>\n

Call for the 2017 Research assistant position<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
EPFL-Ecole polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne, one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology has<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
launched with ECAL, Ecole Cantonale d\u2019art de Lausanne a unique programme called Design Research for<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Digital Innovation. Inspired by the PhD studies, but focused on a two-year intense program, it combines<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
advanced education with a research project, yet with a focus on innovation, pragmatic impact and<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
professional prospects.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cInnovation needs design research to bring the end-user more than just technical performance. Designers<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
must be able to perform as researchers for the industry and organizations, and turn disruptive technologies<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
into convincing user experiences\u201d, says Nicolas Henchoz, the instigator of the program.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The two-year full-time programme is run by the EPFL+ECAL Lab, a design lab of EPFL based in the ECAL<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
building. It combines a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) at 30% and a research assistant position at 70%.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Advanced academic courses including workshops and case studies give access to extensive knowledge of the<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
digital sector in terms of interaction design, research strategies, innovation and collaborations. But the<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
greatest focus is on creating knowledge and having an actual impact. Each student is assigned to one of the<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
research projects going on at the Lab. Based on a transdisciplinary approach, these projects involve the<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
EPFL+ECAL Lab team (senior designers, software and hardware engineers, psychologist) at large. Current<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
research topics include how to bring digital heritage back to life, new inclusive social networks, narrative<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
principles for augmented reality, and big data visualization.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
For 2017, EPFL+ECAL Lab will recruit 3 candidates, who will be able to attend the MAS program and have a<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
research assistant position. Income from the position ensure the candidate a financial autonomy, including<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
the tuition fees.<\/div>\n
