The Lab Manager is responsible for day to day lab operations and for maintaining the safety and useability of the space. The Lab Manager develops and implements lab policies, ensures maintenance of instrumentation, and mentors users of the lab. The Lab Manager will work closely with Genspace staff to plan and execute education, outreach and membership programs. Finally, the Lab Manager manages and coordinates the member-related programming at Genspace. The Lab Manager reports to the Executive Director.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Duties<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Lab-related<\/div>\n<div>Manage lab operations at the community lab facility\u2014including ordering, inventorying, stocking and disposing of materials<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ensure that the lab facility is functioning in a safe and ethical manner, and is compliant with local, state and federal regulations<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Establish and implement appropriate laboratory policies and procedures as necessary<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Oversight of lab instrumentation and upgrades including contracting with and overseeing the work of external vendors; specifying, installing and operating new instrumentation; and monitoring, maintaining, and fixing lab equipment as needed<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Evaluate needs of and provide lab support for Genspace courses, workshops, and other programming<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Work closely with other staff to plan and execute programs<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Help teach in the lab, provide hands-on instructional support (especially for school\/youth programs)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Oversee work of volunteers in the lab<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Participate in broader Community Biology field &#8211; share ideas, stories, listen in to what\u2019s happening at other labs<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Provide support for grant preparation and grant reporting<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0Membership-related<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ownership of member-related Genspace objectives and management\/coordination of Genspace staff efforts in pursuit of these objectives<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In collaboration with Genspace staff, establish and implement membership policies and update as necessary<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Screen, interview, and meet with prospective members<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Review and assess safety of member projects<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Provide safety training, and lab orientation for new members<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mentor members and all users of the lab<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Requirements<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Bachelor of Science in cell or molecular biology, or microbiology, or biochemistry, or closely related field. A Doctor of Philosophy, or an advanced degree with an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Minimum of 3 years of laboratory research experience working with biochemical reagents and standard molecular and biochemical techniques such as PCR, qPCR, gene editing, Western blot, CRISPR technologies, Next-Gen sequencing, etc.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Broad based understanding of biological science principles<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ability to train others in lab techniques and the ability to communicate scientific principles to the public<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Knowledgeable in recognition, evaluation, and control of biologically or chemically hazardous materials, including handling, identification, properties, storage and disposal<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ability to write and develop operating procedures and perform technical reviews of research proposals<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thorough written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Strong analytical and organizational skills to organize, prioritize and manage the successful completion of projects within time constraints<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Works effectively as part of a team with good interpersonal skills.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Skill in interacting diplomatically with persons of various educational, social and cultural backgrounds in a demanding, dynamic and stressful environment<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Computer skills, especially database and spreadsheet applications<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Ability to lift and carry 25lbs for short distances<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Apply<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>Send a resume, listing related skills and experience, and a cover letter to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:info@genspace.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">info@genspace.org<\/a>.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Genspace Lab Manager Description The Lab Manager oversees the laboratory facility that supports all programs at Genspace.
