We created the<br \/>\nFellowship to leverage CUP\u2019s unique position at the confluence of design and social justice<br \/>\nto promote change in the design fields.<\/p>\n<p>What is CUP?<br \/>\nThe Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP) is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of<br \/>\ndesign and art to increase meaningful civic engagement, in partnership with historically<br \/>\nmarginalized communities. We use design to make important public policy and social justice<br \/>\nissues easier to understand so people impacted by them can more easily navigate and<br \/>\nchange them.<br \/>\nOur projects help people claim their rights, access benefits, and fight for more just policies<br \/>\nand systems. For more information, visit CUP at: <a href=\"http:\/\/welcometoCUP.org\">http:\/\/welcometoCUP.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p>How does the Fellowship work?<br \/>\nThe Fellow will be selected through a competitive, juried process and will work with CUP<br \/>\nfrom July 2022 to June 2023.<br \/>\nThe Fellow will:<br \/>\n! Gain professional experience while learning CUP\u2019s methodology for creating effective<br \/>\nand impactful design projects<br \/>\n! Work in collaboration with grassroots organizations and talented designers on critical<br \/>\nsocial justice issues, and learn the language and skills needed to effectively partner with<br \/>\nthese different disciplines<br \/>\n! Be part of CUP\u2019s intensive methodology for bringing community members (\u201cend users\u201d)<br \/>\ndirectly into the design process, learning valuable skills for facilitating design<br \/>\nconversations and incorporating feedback in meaningful ways<br \/>\n! Experience valuable professional development and mentoring opportunities with CUP<br \/>\nstaff, as well as with established and up-and-coming designers in CUP\u2019s network<br \/>\n! Gain a broad range of marketable professional skills, particularly around how nonprofits<br \/>\nwork (such as fundraising, budgeting, and project management)<br \/>\n! Get hands-on experience with the nuts and bolts of production, particularly print<br \/>\nproduction<br \/>\n! Work with an amazing staff of professionals and contribute to the growth and<br \/>\ndevelopment of an exciting, fun, and impactful organization<br \/>\n! Learn about pressing social justice issues, and how to engage with them, as a designer<br \/>\nand an individual<\/p>\n<p>While there are some opportunities to create original design work, the role is like an in-<br \/>\nhouse designer, and will primarily be working with visual content created by outside<\/p>\n<p>designers on CUP\u2019s projects.<\/p>\n<p>How much will I get paid? Are there other benefits?<br \/>\nCUP strives to be a healthy, positive, and sustainable place to work, and to provide pay and<br \/>\nbenefits that support that.<br \/>\nThe selected Fellow will receive a stipend of $45,500 (paid in monthly installments).<br \/>\nWe also provide health insurance benefits, a flexible leave policy, professional development<br \/>\nopportunities, and a reasonable work schedule that allows our staff to have a healthy life<br \/>\nboth inside and outside of work. We are also committed to working together as a staff to<br \/>\nbetter understand issues of race, equity, and justice and to continue to further our own<br \/>\neducation on how we engage with and address those issues as individuals and as an<\/p>\n<p>organization.<br \/>\nThe Fellow will also have access to a budget of up to $500 for professional development<br \/>\nactivities (including conferences, classes, or other activities). They will also be part of<br \/>\nprofessional development opportunities provided to CUP staff as a group. During the<\/p>\n<p>second half of the Fellowship, the Fellow will also have time to work on searching for post-<br \/>\nFellowship opportunities and developing their resume, cover letter, and portfolio during<\/p>\n<p>work hours, and to get feedback and advice from CUP staff on those materials.<br \/>\nThe Fellowship will also provide two sets of mentorship opportunities. The first is<br \/>\nmentorship from the CUP staff in the methods and processes we use to achieve our<br \/>\nmission. This takes place both through working under the guidance of experienced staff on<br \/>\nCUP projects, and through one-on-one weekly sessions with a supervisor. The second<br \/>\nmentorship opportunity will be through a quarterly series of one-on-one mentoring sessions<br \/>\nwith four prominent designers, from a variety of practices. This is an opportunity to learn<br \/>\nmore about the field, gain access to leaders in the design world, and ask questions that<br \/>\nhelp you in your own career development. The Fellow will have the opportunity to help<br \/>\nselect her\/his mentors. Past Fellows have met with designers like graphic designer and<br \/>\nillustrator Br\u00e1ulio Amado, Njoki Gitahi of IDEO, Jonathan Jackson &amp; Sarah Nelson-Jackson<br \/>\nof WeShouldDoItAll, Renda Morton of The New York Times, and illustrator Ping Zhu, among<br \/>\nothers.<br \/>\nIf the selected Fellow is moving from somewhere outside of New York for the position, a<br \/>\nmoving stipend of $500 is also available.<br \/>\nCurrently, the CUP office is closed, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will remain so for<br \/>\nthe time being. However, we anticipate that we will reopen the office by the summer. Once<br \/>\nthe office reopens, we expect you to be based locally and able to work in the office.<\/p>\n<p>What will I do?<br \/>\nThe Fellow will work on a broad range of CUP projects, providing design and organizational<br \/>\nsupport for our Youth Education and Community Education programs. There will be some<br \/>\nopportunities for creating original design work, but the bulk of the role will involve<br \/>\nproviding support on projects with outside designers.<br \/>\nThe Fellow will be part of the CUP office and will work 40-hours a week during the one-year<br \/>\nFellowship period.<br \/>\nThe Fellow\u2019s responsibilities include:<br \/>\n! Participating as a member of a project team working on programs like <a href=\"http:\/\/welcometocup.org\/Projects\/MakingPolicyPublic\">Making Policy<\/a><br \/>\nPublic and <a href=\"http:\/\/welcometocup.org\/Projects\/PublicAccessDesign\">Public Access Design<\/a><\/p>\n<p>! Helping facilitate community workshops using CUP tools, and training others to use them<br \/>\n! Design production work for print and web using Adobe Creative Suite, including creating<br \/>\nvisuals for CUP projects, website, emails, and event invitations; assisting with other<br \/>\ndesign, review, and production, as needed<br \/>\n! Managing the print production process for CUP products<br \/>\n! Researching and providing general support on CUP projects<br \/>\n! Assisting with CUP communications, including email blasts, fundraising outreach, and<br \/>\npress releases, including designing collateral materials<br \/>\n! Providing general administrative and organizational support as needed<\/p>\n<p>Who should apply?<br \/>\nThe ideal candidate will:<br \/>\n! Identify as a member of a community that is historically marginalized in the design<br \/>\nprofessions, including but not limited to people of color; people from low-income,<br \/>\nLGBTQ, or immigrant communities; formerly incarcerated people; and others<br \/>\n! Have a background in design, particularly graphic, communication, or UI design. We<br \/>\nbelieve this is a good position for a recent graduate from a design program. However,<br \/>\nwe recognize that individuals with potential to become great designers may come from a<br \/>\nbroader range of experiences. Therefore, we do not require a degree in a design field (or<br \/>\nany degree at all). However, we do require evidence, in the form of a portfolio of images,<br \/>\nof your skills and abilities as a designer, and your proficiency with design software.<br \/>\n! Be committed to social justice and racial equity<br \/>\n! Have good communication skills<br \/>\n! Be proficient with Adobe Creative Suite software, basic web applications, and Microsoft<br \/>\nOffice<br \/>\n! Be friendly, self-directed, detail-oriented, and able to work in a collaborative<br \/>\nenvironment with a broad range of partners<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the selection process?<br \/>\nReview: Stage One<br \/>\n\u2022 CUP staff will review applications for completeness.<br \/>\n\u2022 Complete applications will be reviewed by a jury of designers, who will evaluate<br \/>\napplicants based on the criteria above, and select up to five finalists to advance to<br \/>\nstage two.<br \/>\n\u2022 The finalists will be announced publicly and featured on CUP\u2019s website, email<br \/>\nnewsletter, and social media in May. Past finalists have received project inquiries and<br \/>\njob offers after being featured. We hope this process brings work and recognition to all<br \/>\nthe finalists and will help get the word out about your amazing skills!<\/p>\n<p>Review: Stage Two<br \/>\n\u2022 In May, the finalists will be interviewed by CUP staff, who will make the final selection in<br \/>\nlate May\/early June.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Fellowship will take place from July 2022 to June 2023.<br \/>\n\u2022 The Fellow will be part of the jury to select the 2023 Fellow next Spring.<br \/>\nThe Jury<br \/>\nThis year\u2019s jurors are:<br \/>\n1.
